if i have both the spiked club and sledgehammer i would choose the nailgun.
or the sledgehammer.
You can swing the club much faster than the sledgehammer - very important against more than one zombie and also by dismissing to hit them with the first swing.
I know a master of a sledgehammer. In his hands it's a really deadly weapon. But that's far away from my ability to play and also for 99% if all players.
For beginners it's better to use a bow or just to run away. For normal and skilled players the club is the best - if you are low in arrows. For real Pro's and if you want to invest to train yourself with it - than the sledgehammer is the best (one hit - one kill).
this isnt the kind of game that requires speed for offense, have you ever found yourself in a situation where it was better to auto fire than to burst or tap fire with an SMG? exept when you get stunned by a couple zombies but in that case i would much rather have a 1 hit kill weapon.
You can stunning 5 zombies with a club in the time you can kill 2 with a sledge hammer. If you have a smg- ok. On normal and higher zombie spawn and also with higher levels you will have many times to handle with groups of them. Also at night is a club much more better to get distance. A club also needs much lesser stamina.
Melee is only mid game or who love it. Early game it's risky. Late game should be no need to do it.
You can use the sledge with the breaking and entering perk to not have to carry an axe and pickaxe everywhere...
But mainly once you have enough stamina for it and especially on harder difficulties the sledge is better as its does far more damage and is more likely to 1-shot, even when damaged.
So early game use a club, midgame when your character is developed enough, sledge.
Extra PvP experience I've had.
I decided it was a good idea to have a PvP file and everybody lived in the same house. There is always someone trying to kill you, I first thought it was my friend trying to kill me, but in reality it was my brother. He wanted the satisfaction of killing me so he tried sniping me when I was going down the stairs, I found out it was him. I soon got close enough to do melee, he got scared and pulled out a bone shiv against my sledge. He was really pissed when I killed him twice in 3 hits. And the Is why I like the sledge better.
It sure is easier to deal with several Zeds with the Spiked Club, but whenever I get my hands on a level 600 Sledge - it becomes my go-to weapon / tool combo.
Not saying it isn't at lower levels, only saying that I prefer to utilize it when it is up to 600 in quality. There's two reasons; 1) Highest possible damage 2) Highest possible durability.
And depending on the game, and its settings - finding an already crafted Sledge, or crafting one (or many) can either take many moons, or not. The same can be said of the Spiked Club though - so in general - I use bows / xbows. But when melee choices are available - based on what is available, that's how I roll.
not to mention the speed at which the sledge depletes stamina early on, it is my weapon of choice tho, its very addictive to me.
