They changed up how the wrench works THAT MUCH?
Because in 16.4 a more powerful wrench gathers more unless you overdamage so ridiculously much you skip phase 2 entirely (only possible in modded)
But I didn't test it on the wrench so I'm not sure if it's the same there.
You should probably test it with and without mods and see what happens...
I know this post is pretty old and you have probably moved on from this need and also may have figured it out already but you could also equip the Diamond Blade Tip mod, which doubles the melee weapons, ie the wrench, durability.
Was looking around for this same kind of information and ran across this post.
