Best Turret type to use?
Never really messed with Turrets but we are about to give them a try. Auto or Shotgun? Which are best and why?

Auto- longer range, and targets heads.

Auto turrets are ok if you only have one (for the 9mm ammo you find). The Auto is a bullethose as it says in it's description and will waste your ammo, you will get a headache trying to recraft it all. Partly due because it has a long range of 20+ blocks. I only buy 1 auto turret at the trader because of this.

Shotgun turrets are definitely the way to go because they are very effective to about 10-15 blocks and can kill normal zombies with 1 shot. The only challenge is getting enough paper to make more shotgun shells, and you do not get alot of paper by crafting it so a trip to the crack a book is often needed.

Dart traps if set 2 blocks high are effective to around 45 blocks and kill normal zombies with around 3 shots (could be wrong here) but are stationary like in minecraft. So you'll need a pressure plate, motion sensor, or trip wire.

Shotgun without question.
Try to place them about 1, preferably 2 blocks high...just to make sure they get the head shot

How do you keep shotgun turrets protected by having them so low to the ground in reach of zeds?

We have Auto's spaced roughly 30 blocks apart on a 4 high wall for added fire-power support during Blood Moons with spikes/barb wire 5 deep. Even with that, we have wights reaching the walls that we finish off from shooting down through arrow-slit blocks.

Wouldn't turrets being set that low risk being hit, or do they "glitch-fire" through solid walls?

I am by no means an expert on the game but my server had an excellent base set up with the shotgun turrets only one block up and set behind two sets of bars back to back and have never lost a turret to green wights or cops. We are set on five out fo six difficulty if that matters.

The 9mm turret is better long range and shotgun good for close defence, but normally if you have both its the 9mm that does the damage, also far better to have 2 pointing to the sky to pick off any vultures especially on horde night im level 200 playing also on level 6 and get 40+ cops attacking the base on horde night

Zombies won't target turrets however I always put a protective cage around mine using iron bars

Ignoring everything everyone has said previously about ranges etc, I would choose shotgun every time. The reason: Ammo. Late game you get bones from dead zombieds around your base, which makes glue, which makes paper, which makes shotgun shells. With the 9mm you're limited to finding brass. To give you an idea of how much you can make, I just made 10 stacks of paper for shells. It's the way to go for my base with 8+ turrets.

ETR you forgwet you alsao need gunpowder, brass plenty about if you look , wrench and can but from traders, i Agree that 9mm the turrets do go though them, i Think you just need to save the 9mm shells for horde night only

I agree.

We only operate the Autos on horde nights for added fire-power support. We'll test out and see how well the Shotguns incorporate with an "iron cage" set-up to put them as the first line of defense for horde nights since they have shorter range.

We just broke 1k for gamestage/day 78 this week, and scavenging runs are getting interesting with getting wights and cops spawning in "regular" POI buildings now. Brass is indeed the limiting factor, and any houses with brass porch lights in nearby towns are getting ransacked. :)

Gunpowder isn't an issue for us, we have build am extensive tunnel system to both nitrate and coal mining sites in the different biomes for the needed raw materials. Much easier to travel a straight tunnel via mini-bike to mine vs. overland travel that comes with "SQUIRREL!!" moments.

The reason I ignored the coal nitrate and lead is that as Frostbringer mentioned, in th late game you can mine ridiculous amounts of them. I mined 20k of each recently. The limiting factor for bullets is brass and for shells it's paper. Paper can be crafted in bulk at home, brass is hard to find high volumes of.

In Fact in the 15 mins since I posted last comment I've mined 4,500 lead
