You can still do this by holding "R" and selecting "Advanced Rotation" from the radial menu.

Also there's still the old bar block where you place it at half height inside a full block instead of placing it on the edge. :-]
It's that part of the castle where you basically leave a gap from where you can throw rocks down on your enemies. He needs enough space to throw things or shoot through I think, but bigger than an arrow slit.
