you can break it open with a pick ax and a lot of time. You might be able pick the lock, later in the game.

I generally find they are not worth the effort.

Either use lockpicks ( can find or craft them later) or simple brute force.
Brute force can take very long and its not advisable without at least a steel pickaxe or better a auger.

omg, tell him how....

Press E when u aim at the safe and u get a option to lockpick it. do that. usually pick will break 3-6 times. so have more than 6 picks.

'hold' e, specifically. Just pressing e makes a little 'this is locked' noise. :)

Utter BS I'm afraid to say. Stone Axe, patience and a lot of whacking will get you in. Found goldmines of guns and ammo and then sometimes a little less. Always worth it, even from day one. I've got 3,000hrs+ in this game.

Don't be tempted to use dynamite to open it, like I did.... Bad things can happen :D

Oh; Also 'Timed Charges' can crack safes.

Whats BS about it? I know that you can bash in a gun safe with a stone axe.
If you have a lot of time and enough stones to repair it. But its still not advisable in the early game from a "time spend/ profit" standpoint.

Its great for you that you do it all the time and find awesome stuff. Happy for you.
Still does not change the facts that with better tools its much easier and more time friendly.

PS: Nobody cares how many hours you played this game.

You will soon have a couple thousand more hours in this game if you spend too much time hitting safes with stone axes...

It’s not really that bad. I usually play a nomadic game early on and just hole up at night in a house with a safe. Something to do waiting for daylight to be close enough to venture out safer.

So far in A18 I'm finding myself looting all day and night for most of the first week so no holing up anywhere and no time really. I'm also finding enough lock picks early that I can save them for gun safes and open a surprising number of them.

I used to try to find a poi with at least one safe before nightfall though, and use that downtime to open it. Makes a lot of sense if you are not active at night.

Yeah, on 100% loot you’ll often find 3-4 in random trash piles. So far, I’ve never had a safe that I didn’t have at least 3 picks for.
