Where's the best place to find animals?
I'm trying to get meat but I'm having a tough time finding animals. I'm in a town which is in a plains biome. Every once in a while I see the occasional chicken, but that's all.

plenty of deer in the forest biome. just gotta be stealthy and use ranged weapons. if your view distance is low you might not see the deer before they do the bolt

Couple thoughts righrt off the top:
1) Are you solo or playing with others? The reason I ask is that each game has a setting for MAX ANIMALS. It allows the game to share out the animals around the players in the game. So the more players in the game, the less animals spawn near each person. Also, once animals have been found and killed, it takes a while for a new one to spawn, so whether you or other people have hunted out an area, once the meat has been grabbed, you'll have to move off to another sector to find more sooner.
2) We've noticed that when you first walk through an area of the map that hasn't seen players (or hasn't seen them for many game days), initially there will be no animals, BUT, if you backtrack over your own path, you'll find they've essentially spawned BEHIND YOU.
3) Find a big sity and walk the steets. You'll most likely run across a wolf or two.
4) Majot roadways also offer more chances to run into wolves.
5) You will find (mostly) wild boar and chickend in the desert.
6) You fill find wild boar, wolves, bear, deer, and chickens in the green (forest) biome.
7) You will find bear, deer, and wild boar in the winter biome.
8) You will find wolves like crazy and deer in the cactuslands (tall grass) biome.
9) You will occasionally find deer or wild boar in the burnt lands biome (something on fire).
10 Once or twice a game week the server will kick out a roving animal back. Either zomvie dogs, or some combination of wolves and black wolves. The wolves are edible. The dogs ain't.

Hope this helps, any questions, give a shout.

Road trip to a new part of the map. If you walk for a few game hours into an unexplored area (or one you haven't been to in a while) you should be able to find several deer and boar, especially in forest and grassland (not so much in wasteland or burnt.)

Even on the roads, wolves and boars show up a lot.

If you stay in one area, you'll hunt it out pretty quickly.

Yeah, there happened to be a boar there. Not much else.

I'm playing on a server. Thing is, hardly anyone ever goes on there, at least when I'm on. Maybe once a day someone will be on there for 30 mins to an hour. Another thing, I'm in a town that's several km from anyone on there afaik. Finally, the animal cap is like 100, which is pretty decent.

This is ironic. I ran around in a forest for about 20 minutes and only found two chickens. I was wandering around the town I live in and I ran into a boar, a chicken, and a deer.

Encounters are pretty spread out, though. Maybe one every other day (90 min days). Since I'm in a plains biome, my main source of meat is from snakes. I usually pass by a snake or two daily. They only give 1 raw meat each, though.

First place I usually check is the woods.

If you turn down the music and the ambient sound, you can hear the piggies,

Oh yeah, didn't think about that. I also tend to see more deer in the tundra biome compared to other biomes. Too bad chickens don't appear there. Those chicks are so hard to see in normal grass...

It's not ironic. It's rather random. Typically though, you're better off away from towns. Zombies chase them off is why.
