Not without a skylight.
Mushrooms however will grow without any light.

If you drill a single hole to bedrock & plant 9 squares only the single lighted hole grows.... Tested it myself so NO, as stated mushies are the exception which can be grown anywhere from what ive seen

That's incorrect, everything within a 7x7 square (without corners) will actually grow around the skylight.

Just farm the surface. Hasn't been an issue since ages ago, when they made it so zombies did not instantly destroy your crops on contact.

well i wanted to move underground for good and farms take a lot of space and there so its more area to defend

You only need defend your farm in PvP. It is otherwise immune short of blowing up the ground it is planted in. In PvP people will steal your harvest if it is undefended. Plus living at bedrock is lame as you can get right now. TFP has yet to introduce an enemy that can get to you down there. So basically until threats at bedrock are a thing it's an exploit to hide away at bedrock.

I always prefer rooftop gardens, as long as you ensure the roof is strong enough to support the weight.

"Underground" farms need a skylight.
No sun, no fun.

Except for mushrooms.
We occasionally start an underground Shroom Room.

Need to be able to use ultra violet lights or be able to grow things hydroponically.
