Is flagstone overrated?
Honestly asking. I've tried it as a starterbase and i just don't like it personally. If you place anything in the wrong place, you have to do alot of "whaking" to fix the mistake. Even though wood->scrap requires more materials, i preffer it because it provides more hp perblock and its alot easier to pickup badly placed frames than it is to breakdown flagstone. What do you guys think?

You're probably right, but then again zombies have bonus damage over wood.

It’s ok for a starter but you go through a lot of concrete and hammers upgrading

It's better than wood and eventually can be upgraded to cobblestone, concrete, and so on.

all construction blocks other than wood can upgrade to concrete. but wood upgrades into scrap rather easily, which then can be upgraded into concrete.

I would look at it like this:
Scrap Iron Block = 2300 durability for 95 scrap iron.

Flagstone/Cobblestone block = 11? 14? idk cobblestone rocks, you get like 10+ stone per swing and 40+ lumps of clay per swing so really quick to get. 1500 durability.

You gain stone while getting iron so you probably don't have to go out of your way to get stone, iron you use for everything important (tools, traps etc).

I would use flagstone -> concrete because it saves on iron which I need for traps and it is also easier to make than iron blocks.

Durability wise, you're best off to stick with the Flagstone blocks and upgrade them to Cobblestone blocks. (Flagstone/500 durability - Cobblestone block/1500 durability - wood-scrap to metal reinforced/800 durability)

The only thing that's a P.I.T.A is gathering the 1100 small rocks/1100 pieces of clay then combine them into 1100 Cobblestone rocks per every 100 Cobblestone blocks you make.

(4 Cobblestone rocks ='s 1 Flagstone block + 7 Cobblestone rocks ='s 1 Cobblestone block)

Fair enough, i think neither flag nor scrap are really any more advantageous than one another, it just depends on ur aproach.

If you build a flagbase your saving your iron for later by not using as much to upgrade/repair, but your using alot more stone and may have trouble continuing to find fresh boulders to replace said stone so you can have the materials to make the concrete your upgrading to.

If you build a scrapbase you have more HP on your walls (500 lv1, 1000 lv2, 1000 lv3 i think) to prevent Z's from getting in and have more stone to make the concrete your upgrading to, but you also lose ALOT more iron in the upgrade process, making it harder to keep your iron tools/weapons around for easier gathering/fighting.

I guess at the end of the day, its just a matter of what you personally preffer: offense or defense.

With how easy it is to scrap loot for spare iron, i think i still preffer it over flagstone myself.

Flagstone + Cobblestone has more HP than the 3 levels of scrap iron block iirc?, costs less, and while it IS more costly in terms of making a mistake in building, if you pre-plan your build with wooden frames, and take your time while building, its more than made up for :)

Never touch the stuff except for flooring.

I live out of temp bases that get minor wood upgrades while i'm searching for that perfect location for my fortress and until i can make Concrete.

I miss the cobblestone frames for the ability to place them as desired, and upgrade when ready, but don't mind the Flagstone blocks, even if misplacing a block does require some work to remove it later.

I tend to setup base in the desert, and spend a lot of time digging through the sand towards biomes with biome specific ores, so it's not too much trouble to accumulate a decent amount of stone for later construction of Flagstone/Cobblestone.

In all honesty, I think Flagstone (especially once you reinforce it with an extra round of cobblestones) is the early game material of choice. Look at it from the perspective of how much damage a block can take (as in, if it's between you and a zombie). Wood usually breaks after, what, 200 points of damage? Flagstone breaks at 500 (unimprovd) and either 1000 or 2000 improved (can't recall the exact number offhand).

Also,....and more importantly....early game when it takes a while to gather resources, you can easily gather rock and clay at night, from the safety of a hole in the ground. Just start a hole in a clay patch, go down about six blocks, and you'll have access to the bedrock (below you) and clay (above you) without any danger of zombies attacking while you did....and (incidentally) level like crazy.

I think flagstone should be good both early game and late game.

If you use 100% concrete you are quite limited in how many blocks you can put down.
If you use concrete where it is important and flagstone where it is not as important but you want something better than just wood then it can be quite good.

Comparing mats: (might be wrong but think it should be correct)
1 Cobblestone block = 11 stone, 11 clay balls.
1500 health.
1 Concrete Block = 70 stone, 1 raw iron, 1 clayball. (140 stone for reinforced)
3000 / 9000 health with reinforced.

So for a lot cheaper cost you can make Cobblestone blocks or Flagstone blocks as building material where you don't expect zombies to attack.

Imo flagstone/cobble is more ideal when building a bunker or structure in the ground because you get more than enough stone from minign out your base and get some iron as a bonus, flagstone/cobble also has a decent max load it can support, especially compared to wood. Idk how scrap iron blocks compare, i'm always in dire need of it lol
