How about you only hear footsteps from 2-3 meters from you?
Zombies should have footsteps.
Footsteps will not save those with crap awareness.

This all requires more overhead of the engine, so will have to come after optimizations have been done.
Something to keep in mind too. This is all nearly virgin territory. No other game is attempting to do the kinds of things they are doing with 7 Days to die. The closest current equivalent is Empyrion, and they don't have a voxel landscape. Only the ships and buildings are voxels.
I'm just trying to offer more clarification on the reasoning why we don't have some things yet. If I had more free time, I'd probably pick up Unity and start learning to code it myself.
