Spawn point locations....?

So I tried using the spawnentity (se) command to spawn an animal. After some frustration and looking around, I learned I need to type "se <my id> <animal id>.... then I get a message "No spawn point near player!" My question ...is there a way to find where spawn points are located?

That usually means you are flying and there is no ground to spawn around you.

I'm on my base...about 10 spaces up...would that do it?

Any player made/placed block is not considered a valid spawnpoint by the engine, iirc. So yeah, natural ground/blocks under your feet is all you need.
