Spear vs club
I know spear has more reach (and i heard can attack through bars now). Any other advantages of one starter weapon vs the other?

I dunno, I've never been a melee player but I found an iron spear and now I love melee. Even with no perks it uses almost no stam and easy to get a headshot for 200% damage. I'm sure someone will come along and tell me why I'm wrong but I'm excited to have a melee weapon that I don't have to hug a zed to use.

The club has more power if you're confident you can distance yourself just right so you don't get hit back if the zombie doesn't go down. The reach that the spear has though keeps you a lot safer and seems to attack at a decent rate which is very helpful at the start.
Although i'm confident in my club swings, my preference has definitely shifted towards the spear.

I've been using the spear simply because some of them seem to get grumpy after a few hits and charge me.

Spear... I'm tired of zombie arms being able to outreach me. Spear is marvelous for jabbing and backing up (just out of their reach)

Spear gets my vote as well. It seems much more accurate and easier to use than the club.

i dunno why they bothered to even tell you to make the wooden club. The Stone Spear powercreeps it ENTIRELY. Continual throws of the stone spear make it a far superior weapon. Zombies simply arent optimal to fight up close and the throwing damage of the spear makes it a very solid weapon of choice early game.

They should've removed the club part of the tutorial and changed it to the spear xd

I just watched a broadcast where the player used a spear 6 wooden ladders and 2 frames to kill hordes in perfect safety.

Apparently in 18, ladders can be placed horizontally much like iron rails in 17.4 and the laws of physic do not apply. The zombies can't reach they have nothing they can destroy and - the spear kills them and the player remains untouched all for the cost of a bit of wood and some ingenuity. Exploits aside, that spear definitely was doing the job.

With that said though, I think I will wait for the stable version since there seems to be a cheap way around the AI already.

Broadcasts can be very educational.

Some people wanted a dumb AI that doesn't know what to do. We got it.

Why not both. Throw a few spears when you need range, and bash em to death with a club or sledge.

As some have said...you can go both. I run bow, spear and club. Bow for sneak attacks...I toss the spear when they get a little close and if they fall...it's clubbin' time.

Spear for me, longer reach, faster attack speed, and its actually pretty fun juggling them. I keep 2-3 in my hotbar, so temporarily losing one isn't an issue, I just run up and stab the zeds as I retrieve it.

On A18 For sure spears.
NO way to use melee weapons has a melee weapons, the zombies now have 5 meters away arms, you cannot hit they

I have a little trouble with the spear when they get mad and rush me and get in my face since it does'nt have the wide swing of the other weapons but I found the spear is pretty awesome for sneaking around POI's, you can definetly stab them in the head before you get close enough to wake them up.

Melee is still tricky with zombies with incredibly long arms stretch by lag and positioning. 1 zombie should never be able to hit you if you have a melee weapons especially a spear you did not just make moments ago. The zombie that gets a bite is the one on your flank or the massive horde that breaks your spears and eats your lunch (then you).

Give a touch more reach to spears to compensate for lag as most people play the game online.

Almost all the melee weapons have a slightly increased reach as compared to A17; With most swinging at about 3 blocks away, The fist-type weapon punches at over 2 blocks of reach.. And the spear reaches over 4 entire blocks away. That's 12.8+ feet of reach for a weapon that is typically between 4 and 12~ feet in length.

I did some experimenting on the reach of weapons, and they all reach much further than everyone seems to think; That or the latency on servers atm is real.

I was able to kill several groups of zombies with the fist weapon without getting hit in singleplayer; The zombies almost didnt even get to swing because of the absurd 2+ block reach of even the first weapons.
