Farming stone?
What is the best way to farm a stupid amount of stone? I'm in the process of building a massire lair out of concrete and obviously, I need a stupid amount of stone. Any specific methods that work better than others?

The only one I found that's decent is climbing as high as I can on a mountain and tape my mouse key down.

the best is hitting the small boulders on the surface or digging gravel. the boulders show up on the map as small grey squares and most spawn on clay patches in the forest biomes.

Use TNT on rock.

I agree with the surface boulders. Not to be confused with the large rock projections. The bolders that break down in 3 stages seem to yeild much more rock than the large surface projections. If you cant tell the difference... the boulders have 400 durability and break down in 3 stages of 400 durability. The large projections have 500 durability blocks that have only the first stage like bedrock does. The 3 stage boulders also yield other stuff like iron, lead, nitrate powder and coal.

aiming straight down and taping down the mouse button is probably your most effecient method. While youre at it, you may as well carve out small squares and cause a collapse to bedrock to get the bonus stone from that.

Obviously, a finite resource like boulders isnt gonna get you very far.

In the long run, just dig down and mine for it. The boulders are better for short term, but they run out pretty fast in an area.

If you want to farm stpne without bothering commands much.

dig down to Bedrock.
Crouch.
Aim slightly up while walking forward so you always hit the block in front and then the block above.
Tape Mouse Key and Forward key.

And then wait while your character will draw a tunnel forward.

hmm, great replies so far. I'll try them out and see which works best

I havent been able to find an angle of view, that makes this work. You have?

digging up entire lengths of gravel pathing will also net you the sand you'll need for the concrete mix too

Always mine the primary compass points (N,S,E,W) the stone will fracture easier to make a perfect straight line tunnel. You should be able to see or visualize a Rohr shock/kaleidoscope image before you, using your "sleeping eye" icon, place the center dot slightly above the center of the design and wail away top to bottom of its center. Going to the impenetrable layer of bedrock and mining the blocks above it in the primary compass points direction takes away any feeling of vertigo as you can't go down any further past the blue speckled floor.

Have a team digging a tunnel at night, and you will come up with at least a couple thousand between yourselves. I have made enough concrete to reinforce it, but not enough metal to upgrade to the stage before. I have like 1000 or so concrete sitting in a shelf at home. The fact that I myself have 3 forges of my own dedicated to solely the purpose of making cement does kind of pose a problem with screamers. We also have a single forge devoted to all metalwork. Be it iron, forged iron, steel, anything that needs metal like trussing and minibike parts.

Here's another tip if you're safe underground with no threat of zeds...remap your primary action from mouse to a keyboard key. My wrist gets tired after mining for long periods. Holding down a key like "t" lessens the ol' carpal tunnel chances.

You can dig out large underground sections of stone without fear of cave ins by doing the following.

(1) First and foremost; while topside gather enough clay and small rocks to make a 500 unit stack of flagstone. 1 clay + 1 small rock ='s 1 cobblestone rock, 3 cobblestone rocks ='s 1 Flagstone block. So you'll need to gather 1500 pieces of clay and small rocks for the 500 Flagstone blocks.

(2) Tunnel down to the bottom layer, once there tunnel along one of the primary compass points to the spot you want to mine rocks.

(3) Again, Using a primary compass point (I'll use North for this example), dig a straight lined tunnel along the bottom floor 6 wooden frame blocks in length.

(4) Facing West, dig 6 blocks in length, at the 6th block fill it with Flagstone blocks from bottom to top.

(5) Go back to the North tunnel and dig 6 more blocks in a Northern direction, Facing West, dig 6 blocks in and fill the 6th block with Flagstone from bottom to top.

(6) Go to North tunnel and dig 6 blocks North then turn and dig 6 blocks west, Now..., turn and face South and dig 6 blocks in, you should have run into the flagstone blocks you placed last.

(7) You can now safely dig out all the rocks in your mini squared area w/o fear of a cave in.

Remember!!!!
Always use the Flagstone column's N,S,E,W faces as a point of reference, while expanding your underground rock quarry, always place another Flagstone column on every 6th block from the last (Nearest) one you made, there shouldn't be any more than 5 empty blocks between all your Flagstone column's block faces. Also, if you decide to expand the ceiling upward remember to extend your Flagstone column's upward too, if you hit a sandy deposit and the ceiling gives away under the spot a Flagstone support column needs to be you'll have to add the extra flagstone blocks right up to and touching the ceiling (no air spots between it and the ceiling) in order for the column to support the area around it, if necessary you can add a few more support columns in the caved in dome for extra safety and peace of mind.

After I have mined out an empty space in my under-ground quarry, near, but not under my base of operations I cement off a 10L X 10W X 5H room. It holds 5 forges, 4 for cement making, 1 for rebar frames, and forged steel, 2 cement mixers, 1 for crushed sand, 1 for mixed cement.

It takes 500 pieces of wood, per forge, to break down 2000 rocks, per forge, into 2000 cement per forge. In 83 minutes and 20 seconds I've cooked 8000 units of cement, not once, in the rooms existance has a screamer emerged to investigate it.

When I had a single forge at ground level along with my campfire for day to day use I constantly had screamers.

I moved my base of op's over to the roof of a nearby Ostrich hotel. Using my single forge and campfire for day to day again I was not bothered by a single screamer.

In my observations, it appears, that the farther away from the ground you place your forges and campfires the less likely you are to be visited by screamers. But, that could be my own personal perceptions and not what the actual mechanics are.
