Fire Pit Trap ?
So, I was thinking last night that I might try placing a row of campfires side-by-side in a straight line in front of each side of my fortress with about 1000 wood in each and set them all on fire right before the Horde shows up on Day 7. I am curious to see if the Zombies take any damage or catch fire.

Any thoughts or has anyone tried this yet?

Fires used to set things ablaze as of A16 I don't know. I don't make it a habit to run across my fires when boiling my water lol.

Honestly though in my humble opinion you're better off using that 1k wood making 10 wooden spikes and some scrap iron and make some barbed wire to lace around your base. Do a layer of spikes, then barbed wire, then layer of spikes, then barbed wire repeat. That's what I am doing and from personal experience Ican honestly say that regular spikes compared to log spikes are 10x better.

The barbed wire slows down a lot of zeds and if you have layers of barbed wire for them to slow down you can head shot them a lot easier with your bow or guns reducing the ammo you use on horde night. That's what I have done and it's saved me a lot of ammo and kept my walls from taking a beating. Hope this helps OP.

Yes they will catch on fire. But the damage isn't great and your going to call in a ton of screamers on top of your horde.

I have done all this and more so, I am around day 78 and I am doing great with weapons and everything. I was just trying to get to sleep last night when this idea popped in my head and was wondering if anyone else has tried it out yet.

I have noticed that the Horde seems to be a pretty good mix of Zombies from Cops to Football players to Screamers and it lasts until 6 AM so your going to get your fair of Zombies to kill. For me the number of Zombies isn't a problem and I want them to come. None has broken through and killed me yet and I have all the weapons and ammo for the night.

So do you think there is an Infanite number of zombies and that Screamers will bring in more ( From experience ) or that a Finite number will come for you everytime ? Say ....100

I also noted they seem to attack from one direction and then another and concentrate their attack along one side of the fortress of mine.

I have even place gas barrels around the perimeter and if a Cop or Hard to kill zombie gets close to one I shoot the barrel and blow the Cop to kindom come.

From the looks of things, the horde is set to spawn X amount of zombies based on your level, days survived, etc. THEN once that's finished, a small trickle are suppose to continuously spawn, in order to harass you through the rest of the night.

Sorry if that's not what your question was referring to, but that's what I read it as asking.

Zombies can make a pick-nick in Fire Pits. The damage seems to be extremely low or they take damage but can't be die by fire.

I'd make sure to use SOD or STONE to line the pit, or use some sort of scrap metal to build a little "containment" shield around the area.

It's a good idea though...i've tried a few odd things in the past too and am currently building massive spike pits and using the draw bridge as an easy solution.

Once I built a killbox inside a huge natural hole in the ground. I surrounded the box with embers.
I opened some stinky food and waited. Zombies started dropping in and bursting into flames. [believe me, there's nothing more satisfying than hearing those dogs whimper] Well, I felt obligated to put 'em outta their misery. [this was before screamers] Still, all the noise kept them coming until I was lvl 21.

I set up a small test of just 5 campfires in-line with a row of spikes and barbed wire on the very opposite side of the fires to stop them while in the fires....tomorrow when i fire up the game ( no pun intended ) there's like 1 hour before the horde comes. I have 30 minutes on the campfires so they won't last too long.

Valmod's overhaul mod includes fire traps powered by gasoline. I find have mod vastly superior to the vanilla game.

OP: Yes they work, until the zombies tear them up. In A14 you could stack fireplaces, giving you a backup. Using the barbed wire helps, until they break it. You could do the same thing on a suspended bridge with the fireplaces on top, too. They get stuck running in loops, carching fire falling on spikes then pathfinding back to the bridge and repeating. As scm1893 said, you can susbtitute embers from creative menu as well. Grates/iron bars/fencing will block the fire, so don't waste time with that.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of using iron bars as a fence instead of or with spikes.
