in the map they will appear as little light grey pixels (almost like patches of static)
in the game world they will appear with the same texture as the gravel path or the edge of roads (which do not count towards indicating ores).

They will appear as randomly spaced patches in many biomes. The forest and plains biomes are the easiest places to spot them initially. You can also find them fairly frequently near clay deposits as well.

Once you discover what they look like, you will soon notice they are nearly everywhere

Every path from a POI is gravel. You won't find ore digging those up though that said. but now you know what you are looking for. Look for that same gravel texture mixed into the terrain texture and dig there. Tip: The shovel is best for removing the gravel, not the pick axe.

when you dig in a gravel patch till a block is taken. you will see a single piece of ore in what you gathered. That is what is the dominant ore you will mostly find there.

Most stone has a texture that looks rocky. Gravel looks like beach sand, and about the same texture. When you hit gravel, that means there's a lode of some type nearby, based on terrain type. For instance, if you're tunneling under a snow area, if you dig through enough gravel, you'll eventually find a lode of nitrate mixed in with lead. Using an auger in the later game, you can find up to 60,000 units of nitrate in one vein (possibly more). Gravel's the key to finding the veins, though. You won't see the underground gravel on the map. The map will show terrain types and clay areas, but that's it. Underground is the best place to find veins, and digging down to bedrock in high-elevation areas will prevent zombies from hearing you. My current SP RNG map has my base at elevation 91, and since digging down to bedrock from within my base, I've not had a problem with zombies hunting me yet, even with the auger going. Once you're down there, you can ignore the zombie problem, at least until horde night...and possibly that too, but why would you want to miss the clustered XP?. :)

All the above comments are true.

To me gravel looks like wet soggy corn flakes. It also has a distinct audio sound kinda crunchy sounding. Once you hear that sound its ez to hear when youve walked over one : )

They look like that if you are colour blind. Or unless they changed the recipe since I last ate any. The texture is pretty close, the colour is night and day though.
