Nitrate Powder A16?
I am currently in the process of trying to mine nitrate powder. I realize it is bountiful on top of the charred lands along with coal. However, does anyone know where to mine it? Is it specific to a biome or a certain depth?

I have dug a mine in the grasslands into the charred lands. Along the way, I have found many iron veins and a coal vein. I am beginning to find lead in the mine under the charred lands, but I was hoping it would produce more coal or nitrate powder.

Has anyone had any experience with this regarding Alpha 16? I would greatly appreciate any help or insight. I am wondering if coal and nitrate is further down or if it is all random.

Unless they've changed it from Alpha 15, you can find nitrate in the snow biomes.

Was coal found in grasslands before in alpha 15?

I truly hope nitrate is not only found in the snow this time around?

You can also get nitrate powder from mining the rock clusters as opposed to the giant boulders which do not give it. If you are not in Navezgane you can find it in caves by mining stalactites.

the best bet is to test sample all the gravel patches you come across.
if digging the gravel results in Nitrates, that is a location where you can pull nitrates from that patch, with a chance of finding a few block of solid nitrate.

Aye, I have been. Most of it is iron. I have mined over 10k raw iron when I am not even looking for it.

I am just curious if the ores are still biome specific, or if anyone has noticed any changes in alpha 16. I'd just like to know where to start.

I don't remember nitrate spawning on the burnt forest/charred lands in A15 like it does in A16. So that makes me wonder if they also changed where ores are located.

You can read it in the journal in game, it will tell you which biomes have it the most common

It was snow in a15, I don't actually remember right at this moment if they changed it in a16 but you can check in seconds with the journal while playing. i open it to remind myself any time i forget

In A15, according the the dev notes, ore distribution worked as such:

""Ore distribution 2.0 + Updated surface ores. All biomes have iron ore and a rare chance for all ores. Each biome has a predominate ore which can be seen in small piles on the surface and found in that biome near bedrock. Special ores per biome are nitrate in snow and wasteland, lead in the maple and pine forests, coal in the plains and burnt forests, and oil shale in the desert. You can also look for light brown gravel spots on the ground or the map and dig down from there to find the resource veins."

As far as I know, TFP have not changed ore distribution yet.

So, although there is a rare chance to find any ore in any biome, you will find lots of Nitrate in either the Snow or Wasteland biome near bedrock. The exception is Iron, you will find it in every biome in great amounts.

@OP: you can find Nitrate patches on the ground in the Plains biome (along with lots of coal).

maybe you wanna keep an eye out for caverns as well, a bundle of stalactite yields about 20+ nitrate, and if the cavern is deeply enough you could easily get 1000+ of it per cave.

Look for nitrate in burnt forest, this is new biome where it spawn

This makes me wonder if they changed it so nitrate spawns near bedrock in the burnt forest, since it is now found on the surface. hmmmm, I suppose I can go into creative mode and TnT to the bedrock in the charred lands/burnt forest.

I appreciate this. I thought it was just in the burnt forest. Are the plains only located in the northwest part of the map?

I wasn't aware they added caves to the official map? Or maybe I just need to look online for a map in order to find them?

I've found many caves in SP and MP, so maybe try a different seed

Guys Nitrate is found in Burnt Forests now, not in the Snow biome anymore. A16 notes state that it was changed.
