does anyone know how to use the fill tool?

i assume it is to take blocks and fill a section but when i press l nothing happens, anyone, what am i doing wrong and how do i use the fill tool?

if your on about filling holes eg of you have dirt press on it for the recipes

for missing blocks and large holes you craft dirt into blocks like Green said. For damaged blocks have dirt and right click a hoe to fix blocks.

im talking about the selection for pressing L in debug mode, this does not answer my question. if you look in the options under keybinds you will see it
