So talk to me about pillar bases
So talk to me about pillar bases
Can't seem to find a lot of recent information on this oso thought I'd ask here :) mos the stuff I find is early 2016 or earlier. Not much from Alpha 15

SO as of a15 are there any reasons a pilla base shouldnt work? So far we have a 15x15 area of rebar frames we're filling with cememnt and letting dry. Once dry we plan to use more rebar and concrete to make the main pillars. We have a tunnel dug under and away so our entrance/exit will be a thicker "pillar" at the center of the base that leads down and away to a metal hatched entrance.

How do you do farms onthese? just use dirt on the roof?
We were planning to maybe mix the two types of spikes and make the floor of the first floor be iron bars so we can fire arrows through it. Does this still work? any tips?

We're on like day 13 and have plenty of time to work on this :)

Have a look at my recent screen shots for pit/pillar fortress inspiration. Note, you can shoot through iron bars, but you can NOT loot through them! 50% pillars are the only shoot & loot through option that works for me. Remember, you can only loot up to 3 blocks away

Why create a defense that does not allow you to loot the zeds? Get your rewards!
My base is a non-cheat, slowly evolving structure. Check out my other screen shots for more tips and tricks! (FYI I play SP nomad)

Pillar bases are good with the iron bars the above poster mentions. Making a decent floor with the bars will allow you to shoot through and the Zeds will group up under you ignoring the pillars if far enough away.

can we just do a base with pillars o nthe corners and the middle and not the whole centrer pieces? or will they eat at the pillars pretty quickly?

Here's my basic pillar base (this is an older pic and I did away with the second pillar floor and just went with a simple room). The ladder between floors is in the middle. The (improved, new) dimensions are 9X9X4

Here's my new base

They eat through cobblestone fairly fast, which is why I'm upgraded to concrete by day 7 (longest day setting).

If you're at all familiar with the prision, the spot you see my food growing used to be open. I removed the catwalk railing on the inside, laid down a basic wood flood and placed dirt on top of that.

**EDIT**
too many typos lol

Do you mean so that they can walk between the pillars freely and you shoot down from up top? Yes that's possible too, just have to watch your structural integrity obviously.

The Z's will do very little damage to pillars if they are not blocking their movement to get to you.

Due to the settings I play, during early game I use a quick and dirty 5x5 platform raised by pillars on each corner just to clear towns and that is made out of wood frames of all things, that's how little damage pilars take if they are not blocking Z movement.

yes thank you :) we're still at the pouring the floor stage and were thinking of this method. Any tips for how to put up defenses against zeds? we're nearing day 14 and will probably move after 14 as our current base should hold with 5+ layers of spikes for one more horde night

I've seen people use mostly the ones that turn floor spikes ( the chepaer ones) but should I layer it with the other spikes as well? also will they try to attack the pillar i nthe middle where our ladders will be for entry/exit. even if they cant see the ladder?

The Z's will move to be in the same position as you so if you put a pillar in the middle and stand in the middle, they will attack that pillar as they too want to stand in the middle.

For this reason I prefer to leave the middle (where I stand) free of anything but spikes.

So I used a 5x5 platform, pillar each corner, 6 blocks up. In the middle (which is 3x3) are iron bars to stand on and shoot down. This platform is enclosed with doors on each side and outer lip are iron bars so again I can stand on.

For defence I like to place iron log spikes directly below me (they never get destroyed just need repairing) so I will have maybe a 6x6 or 7x7 area of these iron log spikes which eventually I upgrade to steel. Then outside of this is an ever expanding area or wood log spikes.

The entrance to this platform is off to the side. A small tower which I climb up to and then I jump 2 blocks to my platform.

This is not a bad setup but understand that to loot safely you need to wait until dawn which means you could have some loot despawn on you. I much prefer the 2nd post in this thread and how Floxy_Swoosh builds as it allows you to safely loot and repair throughout the night.

I have seen others post similar builds using pillars in this way and I think it is much better.

Why Wooden Spikes and not upgradable Log Spikes?

Log Spikes seem both cheaper and tougher -and- can be upgraded all the way to Steel eventually.

Cover Log Spikes with barbed wire and it'll create a "slow field" around your base which will still kill them in the odd chance they decide to swing downwards and break any wire.

Can throw down some wooden frames out there to recover any loot then pick them up again.

Bcs farmers don't care about survival but loot, the faster zs die during horde the more loot they can get so it doesn't matter for them that they have to replace almost all spikes after night insteed of repair, the same reason is why they rush concrete while personaly can get away with wood/adobe for many hordes, they want to kill not fix their structure during night, that's why no log spikes.

Atleast they will add that following player thing which will make harder some op buldings causing zombies to gather under player without attacking anything, they will atleast try to climb that ladder...

As of A16 it should not work. The Fat Hawaiian zombie is back with a new HD model. The sole purpose of that zombies will be to blow itself up. Taking down walls and/or pillars when it does. So brace yourself for that....

I do hope that makes it in.... Getting tired of building the same thing.

it was some time ago MM showed off the HD model in game on the blog. So 100% it's going to be in for A16.
