Why create a defense that does not allow you to loot the zeds? Get your rewards!
My base is a non-cheat, slowly evolving structure. Check out my other screen shots for more tips and tricks! (FYI I play SP nomad)

Here's my new base

They eat through cobblestone fairly fast, which is why I'm upgraded to concrete by day 7 (longest day setting).
If you're at all familiar with the prision, the spot you see my food growing used to be open. I removed the catwalk railing on the inside, laid down a basic wood flood and placed dirt on top of that.
**EDIT**
too many typos lol
Do you mean so that they can walk between the pillars freely and you shoot down from up top? Yes that's possible too, just have to watch your structural integrity obviously.
The Z's will do very little damage to pillars if they are not blocking their movement to get to you.
Due to the settings I play, during early game I use a quick and dirty 5x5 platform raised by pillars on each corner just to clear towns and that is made out of wood frames of all things, that's how little damage pilars take if they are not blocking Z movement.
I've seen people use mostly the ones that turn floor spikes ( the chepaer ones) but should I layer it with the other spikes as well? also will they try to attack the pillar i nthe middle where our ladders will be for entry/exit. even if they cant see the ladder?

Just dont stand over the pillars during a horde.
The Z's will move to be in the same position as you so if you put a pillar in the middle and stand in the middle, they will attack that pillar as they too want to stand in the middle.
For this reason I prefer to leave the middle (where I stand) free of anything but spikes.
So I used a 5x5 platform, pillar each corner, 6 blocks up. In the middle (which is 3x3) are iron bars to stand on and shoot down. This platform is enclosed with doors on each side and outer lip are iron bars so again I can stand on.
For defence I like to place iron log spikes directly below me (they never get destroyed just need repairing) so I will have maybe a 6x6 or 7x7 area of these iron log spikes which eventually I upgrade to steel. Then outside of this is an ever expanding area or wood log spikes.
The entrance to this platform is off to the side. A small tower which I climb up to and then I jump 2 blocks to my platform.
This is not a bad setup but understand that to loot safely you need to wait until dawn which means you could have some loot despawn on you. I much prefer the 2nd post in this thread and how Floxy_Swoosh builds as it allows you to safely loot and repair throughout the night.
I have seen others post similar builds using pillars in this way and I think it is much better.
Why Wooden Spikes and not upgradable Log Spikes?
Log Spikes seem both cheaper and tougher -and- can be upgraded all the way to Steel eventually.
Cover Log Spikes with barbed wire and it'll create a "slow field" around your base which will still kill them in the odd chance they decide to swing downwards and break any wire.
Can throw down some wooden frames out there to recover any loot then pick them up again.
Bcs farmers don't care about survival but loot, the faster zs die during horde the more loot they can get so it doesn't matter for them that they have to replace almost all spikes after night insteed of repair, the same reason is why they rush concrete while personaly can get away with wood/adobe for many hordes, they want to kill not fix their structure during night, that's why no log spikes.
Atleast they will add that following player thing which will make harder some op buldings causing zombies to gather under player without attacking anything, they will atleast try to climb that ladder...
it was some time ago MM showed off the HD model in game on the blog. So 100% it's going to be in for A16.
