My favorite thing to do is dig a moat around my house about 2-3 blocks wide and 4 or so blocks deep and line the entire bottom with spikes (the ones that require 100 wood). This is just wide enough you can jump it (if you haven't broken your leg, so make sure there are some 2 block wide areas just in case) but they can't While digging it though make sure you make some ramps out occasionally (wandering hoards will sneak up on you), just not toward the inside where you intend to sit it out that kind of defeats the point. Now mind you they will go World War Z on you and climb over each other and others corpses so you need to be vigilant (the spikes continue to work even with a corpse under their feet). As I stated you should be able to jump over it should any get across the moat of spikes and lure them across to the otherside where more spikes are waiting. You will want to have some dirt patches made up for after because a few of the tougher ones will have attacked the sides of your moat and it will need repairs. And lots of extra wood to replace lost spikes as well as repair them.
These two options should get you through BloodMoon Night with minimal deaths.
The first 7th day horde is manageable with decent defense, but as myschyef mentioned they will scale up in difficulty as the weeks pass by. You'll encounter other tougher zombies like the Ferals, Spider Zombies( climbs wall) Cops(vomits corrosive projectiles and explodes), Screamers( cries out to attract more zombies) and etc. With these, you'll have to strategize and rethink your defenses along with the design of your base.
Even with the best defenses, you should take any available oppotunity to repair spikes, walls, scavenge and clean up the remaining corpses.
Part of the awesomeness of this game is its mulitude of options and playstyles. Some build towers, others castles. Bunkers or fancy houses. Prefab building or starting from scratch. Some build their "home" and build an alternate base for horde nights specifically (also ensures your Bedroll and Storages can be placed away from the chaos). Some fight zeds out in the open, even using Cacti to their advantage in Desert or Plains Biome. Some people don't even build bases, just play as a nomad. And there is nothing stopping you from trying any/all of these things. As corny as it sounds, you're only limited by your imagination ;)
There is no "best" way, even though people will argue otherwise ;)
But some helpful tips:
-Wood Spikes - very helpful early game defense. Wood Log Spikes are good too...but expensive on upgrades. They are more mid/late game as their full upgrade is Steel (after upgrading through the 2 Scrap Iron stages).
-Lots of Arrows/Alternate Bow/Melee - always best to be prepared...better to have leftovers than run out during a horde! Crafting lots of Arrows also increases Weapon Smithing skill which is uber useful. I also find it handy to have both ranged and melee weapons handy...just in case.
-Beer/Grain Alcohol/Coffee - These all give increase your Stamina for a time...so in the event that you have to run away...these can help :)
-Exits - Speaking of running away...usually a good idea to have a couple of exits. One may be jammed with zeds.
-Doors - Currently kind of an issue in the game as the zeds' pathfinding is coded so that they go directly for doors. Some have gotten around this by not placing doors at all. I currently have my Drawbridge high enough so zeds can't reach it while they dance in my pit of spikes. Placing a Wood Frame bridge over a pit and removing it on horde night is kind of an early game Drawbridge of sorts and can be incorporated into your building design.
-Cobblestone - Arguably the best early game defensive block to build with. It's cheap and easy to gather the resources (Cobblestone Frame takes Wood and Plant Fibers and Cobblestone Rocks are made with Small Stone and Clay). Zombies have a damage bonus against Wood...so Wood, not so good :)
There are oodles more suggestions...but I've rambled lots.
Hope this helps!
There are several cheese tactics you can use to avoid them mainly digging deep underground or sitting on top of a building with stairs knocked out or lower rung of ladder broken off or nerd pole up onto the roof of a house.
I guess for a beginner struggling with the game, cheese it till you make it but eventually you are going to want to take them on properly and posting about using above tactics without the disclaimer that they are gamey AF is going to be frowned upon by elitist punks like me.
I think some of the others have given you good non cheesey tactics if you want to go that way which I recommend you do but basically you are going to be using a lot of spikes and actively defend your base.

I thinks its more about being a newbie rather than having a newbie base, for my first 7th day horde my base is usually made out of wood frames as I spend my first 7 days looting solid so no time to build anything better and I don't need to, they dont even come close to breaking the frames.
