How is the game saved in singleplayer?
Is the world autosaved every so often? Just wondering because my game randomly crashed after a 2 hour session and can't be bothered to start it up again right now. How much progress will i have lost?

It kind of saves the progress by itself, however you have to backup your files every now and then. That way you have a save on file in the case of your game deleting your progress.

The game saves on exit from what I can tell. Even when it crashes. I've had the game crash on me and lost zero progress.

in SP, the world and player data saves when you click quit (Try not to alt f4 straight out, it can corrupt or not save your game Edit: it is possible that if your game crashes on clicking quit or with certain types of issues, like a memleak causing the crash it can also corrupt saves and reset your player to level 0 with no gear when you rejoin that world)

MP and Dedicated is a little different, depending on if you're hosting the MP or an Admin.
You save the world with the command sa and it periodically saves a backup of the world data, player data is updated as people play.

Ok thanks. That makes sense.

I should mention on the dedicated, the player data is saved on the server and if you crash, d/c etc... it saves it to file, so no matter what happens client end, the server saves the information upon it registering you d/cing.

You can get issues with client and server desyncing though, which causes glitches and bugs with containers and such.

SP saves when you hit Esc. no need to exit anymore.

@OP: if you want you can open the console [F1] and type "saveworld" at any time. :-]

Ok thanks all... i'll remember "saveworld" command.
When i reloaded my game despite the crash it actually loaded up in the same place as when it crashed where the stag was right in front of me.

I have had very few crashed in SP, but I did have one where as mentioned early, I came back as a level 1 and had starter gear. Since then, I back up my game once a day. What really surprised me was that my base and anything I had put in storage was still there.

I am not terribly computer literate...where on a PC are the game save files held and how do I back them up?

For windows at least it is at
"C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\7DaysToDie\Saves\<World Name>\<Save Name>"

An easy way to reach the Roaming folder specifically is to do a search via the windows bar and search '%appdata%' and select the roaming folder that should appear in the list, the 7dtd folder will be near the top of the new window.

Then navigate into the saves folder, whichever world name is the right one, and backup the entire folder of whichever one has the right save name.

In the future, start a new thread instead of necroing an old one.
