Nailguns
I know they're supposed to be an advantage to using a hammer, or at least is my understanding, but a side by side comparison doesn't seem to prove it. It costs the same to upgrade a wall with it as it does with a hammer... so what am I doing wrong? Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be "duh"

Hit a cobblestone wall to upgrade it with a hammer. Now try another with a nailgun. Takes 5 hits with a hammer to upgrade cobblestone but only 2 (if I remember right) with nailgun.

Yes, it's still the same amount of materials needed but nailgun is waaaaayyyyy faster upgrading things.
It's the frequency of the hits, hammer's like 1 hit a second give or take, nailgun is 5 hits a second, so holding your finger down on the right click will almost insta upgrade a block to max (wet cement for drying period, after it dries reinforced steel and stainless steel) provided you have the materials available in your backpack or toolbelt.

Edit: You can also skirt walls really quickly holding the right click down and running the crosshair over the various blocks if oyu're only partially upgrading (make sure you don't have say iron on you if you say only want to upgrade to reinforced wood)

in addition to whats already been said, the nailgun repairs 250 hp per click, hammer is 150 i think, added to the speed of the nailgun means much quicker repairing.

Okay so the nail gun is simply faster. It doesn't use less materials than a hammer...
boo.

Why would a tool use "less materials" to build the same exact thing?? lol :steamfacepalm:
Because Science!

I don't know, I think science is a good point. The same reason you're able to pull more materials off of items with a better wrench. Better tool, less matierals to construct something. I think that's an intuitive notion, yes no?

Also from what I have noticed the Nailgun does not lose durability when using it to upgrade blocks. The only way I have seen that the Nail gun loses durabiity is if you shoot nails out of it. Also the Nailgun can be used even without nails to upgrade.

I don't know... up to now there's no concept of "wasted material" in what we build.
That's only applied to harvesting and repair, though I must admit it would be kind of cool.

Nothing to do however with how the game works now mind you.

It would be interesting, IMO i'd like it if the quality system gone beyond being just a number that directly affects performance, in reality if you had a brand new blunt knife or a worn but sharp one you'd use the sharp one simply because it would do the job better yet going off the in game logic the brand new one would be better simply because its a better "quality".

In alot of ways the quality system contradicts reality, IMO the earlyer a10~a11 system was better in the sense it tied in with reality better, tools or guns were either good, ok or bad instead of the "Its perfect but worn out" or "its garbage but in perfect condition" we have now but the old system wouldn't tie in with the XP system.
