You sure about that ?, I have been growing them in sand on my Desert Island.
Do the trees get to 1200, because I thought they only got to 900 in sand and gravel.
They should not grow in sand. If they are growing in sand then one would assume that will be rectified in upcoming builds. They did just rework the whole farming system so inconsistencies would be expected really. At the very least you would get less yield like growing crops in unfertilized soil. Though something like a pine tree would not grow in an arid location like that lacking fertile earth and adequate amounts of water. Same for a ♥♥♥♥♥ or maple tree.
Not sure if it was deliberate or not but in case it was not: it's birch.
Anyways, I've been growing maples in an arid place but it wasn't exactly desert, it was that desertish area which had dirt as primary ground. Tundra? I don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ know...
I also can't remember whenever or not they went to 1200 but going by how nice and big they looked when fully grown (context lol) yeah?
But then again, my world has a desert which has a houseblock sized strip of snow right in the middle of a desert city where it used to snow during rain still going "you're overheating".
So maybe my world is just bonkers :D
1200 or 900 doesn't matter as much though as the fact whenever or not you'll get 2 saplings for cutting them, which in both cases should apply unless the tree's dead already like in burnt forests or from dead pines.
Anyways, as far as the other types go:
All craftable grounds, plain, forest, grassy and even burnt, produce 1200 dura trees which yield 2 seeds upon felling.
However, desert planted trees with only 600 dura STILL yield 2 seeds each upon felling, so you end up with less wood in the desert, but not less trees.
They didn't seem to take that much longer to grow either, maybe one day? Dunno, I afk'ed it in godmode because it's 60min / day in my game and when I made a 10min / day creative game I STILL ended up getting 60min / day...
No idea what went wrong there.
Sigh, time to start the game back up and test that tilled and fertilized soil.
Also while we're at it: please add variations to planted trees, devs.
Currently we have 2, 1200hp and 600hp :x
Edit: while testing the farming soils in a new world where the 10min days actually work did I notice something interesting: trees don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about your day length, they grow by passed real time : /
Before the growth time was around 1 day per stage aka 1h real time, with 10min days happened nothing within the first 3 days.
Edit 2: seems like trees also don't care about tilled or fertilized soil, atleast their growth speed isn't affected at all and the yield so far isn't either, but they only recently finally reached 1200hp, so dunno if the other two will go further than the control ones.
