Mechanical parts without a wrench
My last wrench is broken and i'm 5 mechanical parts short of a workbench... Is there any decently reliable way to get mechanical parts without a wrench, or should i go looking a for a new town to loot and hope for another wrench.

You could try go to a trader and sell some stuff, and to check if he have any mechanical parts for sale, either that or just try and find another wrench somewhere. also might be worth it to try and repair your wrench too, tho i cant remember off my head what it takes, but im sure its cheaper than making a workbench for making another one.

You need forged steel to repair a wrench.

wrench is in steel tier. I'm only at iron at the moment so i cant repair the wrench. You need the steel smithing perk and some steel bars (i think you might actually need mechanical parts too :steamfacepalm:) to repair it.

Ah yeas thats right, sorry, it have been quite long since i have tried to repair a wrench...heeh:steamhappy: I usually now, when i play go try and find another one when i need it, tho depending on your luck, it can be quite the pain.

Lol... I just had a wrench drop from a crawler... Problem solved. Now i just have to find the last airconditioners in town that i haven't already broken down.

however, since the workbench does require those mechanical parts and finding a wrench is luck of the draw, it would still be interesting to know if there is a more reliable way of getting these pre-wrench. i know its possible to get them in working stiff crates sometimes, and i think i've seen them in cardboard boxes in garages. Surely there must be something you can dig your pick into that will occasionally give you a mechanical part or 2.

I think you still have to find a wrench in order to bootstrap your way to building/acquiring a workbench - which will let you make wrenches.

As suggested before, the Trader(s) often sell them in 10-20's. So if you cannot, for the love of the RNG god, find another wrench - there's always that options.

I do not think you'll get any mech. parts if you use anything but a Wrench on all items that otherwise normally yield mech. parts from wrenching it. But, Wrenches are somewhat common in all sink cabinets and mech. parts can drop from zombies also(see Skaterboarders - they're the ones with the hoodies) and also in Working Stiff and Shotgun Messiah crates.

It's all about that RNG though - it can be a PITA. ;)

yeah. i was kinda against the idea of a circular build path when i first saw it. Need mechanical parts to get workbench, need workbench (and even more mechanical parts) to make a wrench, and need a wrench to get mechanical parts. But then i realised that they were kinda common. The problem was i'd run out of sinks to search, so i was gonna have to go and look for a new town or wait several days for my loot respawn timer to elapse. Luckily i found one, although it may not have been the crawler that had the wrench actually. I had looted a bunch of cars too and hadn't really been paying attention. Just realised i had one in my inventory when i went home to offload.

Kitchen cupboards are always reliable sources for wrenches from my experence, I think i've found mechanical parts as random loot in trash cans before but its extremely uncommon, I could be mistaken for zombies drops though.

Specifically the ones with sinks in them. The regular kitchen cupboards don't have wrenches that i'm aware of. Any of the one block cupboards that have sinks in them has a chance for a wrench, whether its in a bathroom or a kitchen or whatever.

Yeah, the sink ones are definately the ones that have wrenches.

You can also craft mechanical parts, but it's part of the same requirements, you need the workbench to do it

Mechanical parts can sometimes be acquired from wrenching toilets. But a more standard location that will always yield mechanical parts are grocery carts. On average 2 per cart. 1 if your unlucky, and 3 if the gods favor you. Haven't gotten 4 from them before...that I noticed.

And filing cabinets, swivel chairs, cars....

Once you aquire a wrench, you can easily wrench a workbench you find in the wild say at a pass and gas and take it home with you. No need to build one yourself. Beat it with a stone axe till it's hitpoints are almost gone then wrench the last few hitpoints, viola free workbench. This also works for spotlights and alchemy stations.
