There's several servers charging money now
There's one that resets every so often and charges $20 to keep your base between resets
No one is forcing you to join a server being run by people you don’t know.
I do question people charging money for server “perks”, if that is even allowed.
Of course it's allowed, servers cost money. Any time they spend administrating it or moderating also has value.
In particular services that require human interaction on the part of an admin should not be expected for free.
I've run servers with 500+ players (average 15 to 20 active at a time), when you start putting in 8 hour days just to micromanage constant player requests, you start wondering if you deserve to be paid for your time
Active servers being managed by dedicated admins aren't playing the game at that point, they are babysitting a game full of bugs and monitoring new players for suspicious behavior while jumping to the needs of their most dedicated customers
I'm sorry if you don't think a full time customer service position deservers some minor compensation
Sadly this game doesn't even have the full suite of tools that say an MMO would have for server management (I've actually worked as a professional Game Master and Moderator (paid) for some much bigger games than this), doing it as a hobby for 7dtd is actually harder than some jobs I've been paid to do because the game itself lacks many of the built in tools that would allow for it to be done easily
Anyway I'm taking a break from doing it because the income even from donations is not enough to be worth my time while the game is this slow. It peaks for a couple of months after an alpha release and then the players all get bored and drift away again
We'll see if that changes after the game is fully released. As it stands now the game really only sustains the average player for about 100 hours before they exhaust the content, and then it's just a question of how many times they are willing to repeat it until bored
Trying to treat the game like an MMO with players "living in the world" for thousands of days is going to require a dedicated player base on that server and active admins, and those admins deserve some compensation for their time, even if it's just a few dollars a week to cover caffiene and snacks while they "Work"
Thank you for the very thorough explanation for Server Administration when it is a full time job. I think donations or charging a monthly fee for you server admin time are great, but that wasn't directly the discussion topic when I joined the thread
My thoughts were more to the licensing agreements between someone running a gaming server for a game they purchased and the owner of the game/IP when it comes to selling in-game assets/perks for real money, the legality of that.
Is there such an agreement set-up for 7days to die to allow selling in-game assets- i.e. not wiping or deleting someone's base, or even providing in-game material resources for a monetary value?
I know that some MMO/MP game allow this as long as it in-game item trading and doesn't "cross the streams "between in-game/real world currency, but when it does, the Ban Hammer hits hard.
yeah,
Donations for server admins are great, but when its starts going a bit beyond donations and goes to a "pay to win" i dislike that strongly.
Its not really something for 7day2de since Admins can make basically anything for free vs. someone selling high level in-game items in a typical MMORPG, but I hope that it would not be something that happens in our community.
As far as I am aware there is no kind of agreement like that in place currently and due to the way servers are handled I would not expect one
Digital rights management or "ownership" of an in game asset usually falls on the shoulders of the server owner, what you see with most MMO's and their ability to dictate what assets you can or can not sell is because that digital content resides on their personal servers that they own
In the case of privately run servers (like 7dtd's model), the server owners get to make up those rules
The thing to remember is that they are not selling you artwork or property that belongs to the game creators, you can only view that stuff if you purchased the game (you now have the right to display that content on your screen through gameplay)
If they are selling you access to "use" a something, it's the digital service of being allowed to use that asset on a server that they personally own
If there were actual transfers of rights to images or transfers of digital data between servers accross regions (which would happen if you could move assets from one server to another) you would face a massive host of additional laws and contracts, but none of that exists here
The rights you have to access content sold to you by the games creators is available to you in single player or on servers you own
The rights to access content as provided by someone's private server is between you and whatever they want to allow you to use while you there. If you pay them anything it's for access to the files on their server, that they own. It's their version of the content that you are paying (or not paying) for
If that content happens to simulataneously use some art assets from the game, well you already paid the game creators for permission to see those things, now you are paying the server owner for permission to use his server files that trigger events or items to be avilaable to you while connected to their personal server
If you don't want a "pay to win" scenario, feel free to choose servers that don't have that
Personally on the servers I've managed, donations were primarily for cosmetics and convenience
The daily routine of monitoring for cheaters and trolls was done as behind the scenes as possible, some of the tools avialable let you monitor server activity without being logged in, this allows you to be less disruptive to the players who are not cheating
One of our admins used to to always have the chat app open on his phone just to watch for trolling and spam, he was rarely ever logged into the game, but he still put in 10+ hours a day protecting the server
The problem with rules that are arbitray is that they are open to interpretation and since, let's face it, this is just a game, the concept of fair play or rational thought are concepts that do not apply. The admin on this server is an emotional being, not a rational one, like most servers... I have no doubt the technical issues one of the posters commented about was simply the admin disliking his/her ingame comment and punishing you for it -- after all, if the kid invites you to your house to play and his real friends pay to have the right to use the xbox controller, don't expect to be allowed to use the xbox controller.
Simply put, defend your position and deal with the consequences when dealing with possibly unhinged admins, since they are humans and ego plays a hug part when confroting someone who holds power (real or imagined) .... this applies to the real or virtual world.
Live free and enjoy the game.
