devil rooms

now devil items cost a lot more heart and some of them are nerfed why would I ever give up my health when I can just go to angel rooms and get equally good items for free???

Devil deals haven't had their prices changed much(I think the changes that were made were reverted). Also, Brimstone and Mom's Knife are still better than basically everything in angel rooms barring Sacred Heart(and maybe Spirit Sword, though the sword is still somewhat worse than the 3 items mentioned before). The devil room is still more consistent than the angel room in my experience.

It's the other way around in my experience. Especially in hard mode, where blue hearts are more scarce.

Also, the devil deal item pool has currently more than 100 items and has been dilluted with mediocre items the past few DLC's.

The angel room item pool however, has only 63 items and the overal quality of those items is higher imo.

I still go for devil rooms on 50% of my runs, but angel rooms are definitely better than them nowadays.

I mean, the free angel deal is hard to pass up but afterwards I think I prefer stuff like Ceremonial Robes over something like Dead Scrolls still. Angel deals are better but devil deals are still good due to being more consistent and allowing you to take multiple items if you end up finding more than one. If you are playing as a character that can't have red hearts, then it's angel rooms all the way. With stuff like Act of Contrition in angel rooms, taking devil deals is still very much viable.

But... You can't get encounter an angel room to get Act of Contrition after you take a devil deal.

Angel rooms are definitely better in repentance but unless you have the book of virtues on basement 2 you might not even get one until depths 1 and the item you get might not even be that good. So for me checking the devil deal is mostly a matter of how desperate i am for a damage up

Yes, but you have a guaranteed angel room if you skip the first devil deal(which is a point where you probably won't have much HP to spend anyhow).

I think comparing Ceremonial Robes to Dead Sea Scrolls is disingenuous, they aren't equivalent items within their pools. Even post-nerf, Ceremonial Robes is essentially a must-take if you are planning to go with Devil Deals.

A more apt comparison would be items like The Quarter or Brother Bobby in the devil deal pool, and yeah, I'd rather have Dead Sea Scrolls than those items. Dead Sea Scrolls isn't great but, even before Kamikaze was removed from its selection process, it'll give you a health profit if you keep using it.

I actually think the soul heart deal system is more of a problem, if anything. Would personally like to see the 1-heart x 2 soul heart deals be changed to a 1-heart, 1.5 soul heart deal.

Anyway, you're also forgetting the fairly obvious Godhead. Crown of Light is also up there. Holy Mantle, The Wafer, The Relic, Book of Virtues, Stairway and The Soul are all also won run items IMO even if they aren't direct damage increases.


I think saying "devil deals aren't viable" is a massive extaggeration and "repentance is the direct cause of devil deals being ruined" is also wrong. However, I think that on the whole, Angel Deal runs are better right now than Devil Deal runs.

devil deals just give a crappy damage up most of the time. While angel room has a ton of game carrying items and better stat ups

Nothing has been reverted indeed. The only thing that got patched is Dark Bum only costing 1 heart instead of 2 now.

I know that something got its cost reduced, so I was referring to that. Dead Cat's cost is pretty irrelevant as it removes all your heart containers in exchange for one.
