Can the retail version be activated on steam?

I would really like to buy some sort of collectors edition retail, but since the retail versions will come without any DRM I wonder if I would still be able to activate it on steam?

Probably not if it's DRM free. I feel like people would be able to exploit it if they did that. You can link it to your Steam Library, but that's probably not what you want. I'm just guessing by the way.

If you're pre-ordering, your best bet is probably to contact either the developers or the publishers directly.

But the retail version does not force the customer to use DRM (as your source says)...but will it give the customer the possibility to do so if he/she wants it?

Retail versions are not DRM free, have you lost your mind? You have to have the DVD inserted to play retail PC-DVD games. That is the definition of DRM, a particularly easy to defeat DRM scheme mind you (no CD/DVD patches) but DRM nonetheless.

The question is if I can activate the retail copy on steam. If the DVD is required for playing or not does not in any way alter the question.

where are you buying Risen 3 from maybe you can look on the store page and see if it needs steam to play it but more then likely it will need steam cause the 2nd game needed it

I don't know yet, but most likely from a local retailer.
The thing is that in some articles I read that the retail version will be DRM free, so...?
