No sure what you're smoking but they're far and away, BETTER than what they were under JoWo. When JoWo published them they released broken far worse and buggier than anything since JoWo. Do your homework man.
Risen 1 is worth repeating on occasion, but the series went totally off rails ever since.
2/3 Gothic series [Jowood & Piranha Bytes]
1/3 Risen series [Piranha Bytes]
Games nowdays are liniar as hell, where u used to be able to roam freely through gothic.
I wanna play a game and figure it out myself, not someone holding my hand when to go to the next ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bit of the game > <
Yea even a pile of ♥♥♥♥ looks good if you have nothing else to compare it to.
That's also why every bandwagon fan loves Overwatch. Even though older games like TFC and Global Agenda did it better years before.
Here, let me explain my line of thinking with more detail so you guys understand what I mean..
My ranking goes as such.
Gothic 2, Gothic 1--------Risen 1, Gothic 3.------------------Risen 3, Risen 2, Gothic 4 = Wtf happened?
With Risen 1 and Gothic 3 almost tied, a moderate-to-high distance between G2 & G1 and Risen 1, and a grand departure from the original style and quality with Risen 3, 2, & G4.
:
:
G2 & G1 and many other titles like: Baldur's Gate, Starcraft, Dungeon Siege, Deus Ex, WarCraft 3, Half-Life, etc. were without a doubt the pinnacles in a golden age of gaming during the late 90s and early 2000's.
That being said, Risen 1 is the most similar to G1 and G2 in quality, gameplay, and style. So, it is clearly the best of the new series. Where as Risen 2 is a great departure from the originals and Risen 3 is a failed attempt at returning to Risen 1's relation with the originals.
G3 was released in a trash state and the story and character development were meh compared to the first two, but overall it wasn't a bad game. It was just a very poor release and had the fated downsides of being the third item in a triliogy. (the 2nd item of any trilogy is typically the most favored, followed by the first item)
My point is:
If Jowood was really that bad and significantly holding back Piranha Bytes from success then why hasn't game quality improved?
If Jowood was the problem shouldn't Piranha Bytes current lone game quality far exceed older titles with Jowood included or at the very least match the quality they had with Jowood?
My theory:
Jowood clearly created problems for Piranha Bytes, but might have also solved some unexpected problems too. Those problems (and maybe others) have now subtly re-surfaced; preventing Piranha Bytes from reaching the potential they had already achieved with Jowood long ago.
Edit: some problems with censorship regarding mentioning the words and,G2 next to each other in the reverse order.
or... and just hear me out here... I'm capable of enjoying multiple games on their own merits and not get bogged down in trying too hard to compare them. Is Gothic better? yeah so what? Is Risen 3 a bad game? ♥♥♥♥ no!
Do I absolutely love System Shock 2? Yeah, does that mean I have to ♥♥♥♥♥ about how bioshock is dumbed down and terrible? no, that would be stupid. but you know.. whatever. go ahead and hate on stuff and be super condescending to everyone who disagrees with you, I'll just.. you know, enjoy games
We would have more Gothic's and System Shock 2's if people like yourself weren't willing to settle for lesser products.
I mean just think about it. What's the incentive for developers to make good games if they can sell you something inferior and cheaper to make for the same $$?
Pirahna Bytes no longer exists? Where are you getting your info? It's JoWood that no longer exists, they went under in 2011 and were bought out by Nordic Games. Pirahna Bytes is releasing a new game in October.
PB's departure was not due to JoWood's demise. PB was already working under Deep Silver by the time JoWood ceased to exist. The break up occurred because JoWood forced the release of an unfinished Gothic 3.
