Max and Mizi are pretty bad, to name two off of the top of my head.
I prefer to start with either Skroig and Wes or with Pyro and Opbot, but that’s just me.

Max is a great pick as a starter hero. Immediately generating value from Endless Expert allows you to fast track your research, which often turns into either additional resources from generator upgrades or allows you to stay ahead of the curve on turret research. A big part of succeeding in Dungeon of the Endless is snowballing an early advantage into a wealth of resouces, and Max helps with that. He's also quick enough to be your crystal runner early, so that gives you more flexibility in choosing your second hero. As pointed out in one of the reddit posts above, he's not great in combat, his combat buff is extremely weak past the early floors. Feel free to dump him mid-late game if another hero shows up that fits your squad better.
Similarly, any of the heroes that can grab Operate early or cheaply (OpBot, Rakya, Wes, etc.) tend to be good starters, they start generating extra resources early, you can easily compensate for hero weakness by using the extra resource to lay down additional prisoner prods.
Mizi is not a hero I personally favour as part of the starting squad, but she's not the terrible avoid pick the above poster claims. She does quite well early kiting due to her damage being delivered in one big burst shot, and mid-late game Hellfire provides much needed AOE for handling crowds. Her defense penalty and loss of personal damage when paired with other teammates never makes a tangible difference worth noting, and is mostly flavour. Not a top tier hero, but a very useful one, if your squad doesn't have AOE, I wouldn't hesitate to grab her.
Heroes that I dislike starting with tend to be Crew (high leveling cost) that are terrible fighters. For example, I'm not a fan of Warden Mormish as a starter. He's a good hero, but he's horrible at fighting early, needs a babysitter to move around at decent speed, and eats a ton of food before his Operate turns on. You're much happier to see the Warden show up later in the dungeon with a few levels under his belt rather than have to pay the full cost of leveling him from scratch.
