Should I Get the Amplified DLC Right Away
Picked up this game (well a friend bought it for me,) and I was wondering if I should play the base game a bit first before adding the DLC, or if I should just go ahead and get the DLC right away.

I'm someone who has spent more than 70 hours before getting the DLC, so I don't really know how it would feel if I had played the DLC early on. Although, I can enumerate some of the additions:
• An extra Zone 5 (that does not add any story for the original main characters, it just plays right after the 4th boss without any cutscenes)
• An extra boss
• I think 4 or 5 extra characters including the DLC main character
• New weapons and items + changes in some items
• An optional version of the shopkeeper, performed by Nicolas Daoust
• More game modes

Well, my only issue was having 4 additional levels for a character that dies in 1 hit and when missing a beat (and cant use any other weapon than the normal dagger xP). But maybe you can practice the 5th zone by playing the DLC

If I were you, you can make a backup of the original game, as well as the DLC version, so if you feel like switching between the two, you dont have to download the 200mb of files.

If you already have the base game (meaning you can't get the DLC in a bundle), you should play for a while to gauge how good you are before getting the DLC. IMO, although it adds some great new items and mechanics, that also makes the base concept harder to learn. Plus, much of the content is more suited to players who will stick around - additional challenging modes, items that mainly help harder characters, and more rare items.

Difficulty-wise (minor spoilers):

    Pros:
  • Ooze golems (floor 4) get a massive nerf.
  • New items such as Spiked Ears and Heavy Glass Armour make it far easier for better players, but don't help less experienced players at all.
  • Many uncommon yet powerful items are added, such as familiars, magic food, new shovels, and new torches.

    Cons:
  • An extra floor is added, which makes it harder to do all zones runs.
  • Many new and and complex items may make it hard to learn the basic game.
  • All of the new modes added are designed to be a challenge, and are not recommended at all if you can't complete the base game.

I would get it after beating the game with all characters in single or all zones mode.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I think I will wait a bit on the DLC based on what you all said. I finally have some time to play the game this weekend (played about an hour as of this posting,) and it is certainly challenging at the start. I am enjoying it quite a bit though.

I think you should (I know that this thread is pretty old)
