My Fate review
Seeing as there seems to be zero discussions, content or reviews for this game, I'd like to hop in and write about Fate a little. While I don't own the game on Steam, I purchased it from WildTangent a number of years ago, and have spent quite a bit of time playthis game, as well as its many sequels.

Long story short, Fate is a Saturday morning cartoon version of Diablo. This doesn't mean it's bad-in fact, the gameplay-while simple-is a hell of a lot of fun. It also doesn't mean that it's without its dark elements- the monsters in Fate are as murderous in later levels as the darkest that the Diablo series has to offer.

Those of you who have played Runic Games Torchlight series will note that the game has a very similar look and feel-which makes sense, since Runic Games alum Travis Baldree designed and programmed this game. In fact, while Torchlight and Torchlight II get called the 'spiritual successors' to the Diablo series a lot, it's really sort of unfair, given that they have a lot more in common with Fate than with Diablo.

This game eschews complete doom and gloominess and goes for a more storybook-style aesthetic, saving the doom and gloom for later parts of the game-with dramatic effect. The characters are charming, yet not annoyingly so. The story is simple, yet NOT throwaway, and the mechanics-while simple seeming-are only so on the surface. While it might not have a lot of bells and whistles, it manages to provide just enough flash and style to give you something to smile at at least once per game session. It's also the arpg that introduced pets to the format, and it also has an extra value factor, in that the game is very mod-friendly.

In fact, a large number of mods exist for the game, some that completely transform it, adding new stories, items and monsters.

Ultimately, what you have is what was a solid investment at its original price of $20, and an absolute steal should you get it on sale.

GREAT review Zidders (from your friend Vlad at the Runic fora here) and I woukd just add that even though the game has a Saturday morning cartoon look, the monsters in Fate are as murderous in later levels as the darkest that the Diablo series has to offer. ;)
Yep, agree, great review. For some reason I never heard about this game. I think I need to pick it up!
Quick question: Are there endless dungeon levels as in Torchlight and Torchlight 2 where you can just go forever. Are there different dungeon looks or paths?
I still have the original installed. Hopefully the Steam version doesn't subject you to WildTangent's scammy Wildcoin advertisements. Can you run this at 1920x1080? The highest the original would get was 1280x1024.

thanks for the review of this i've been a massive ARPG fan since Diablo 2 and strangely i've never heard of this and also felt a little dismayde with the current games of the genre although yes i do like the 2 torchlights, with the likes of RAW and dugeon siege 3 i needed something a bit more so i think i will pick this up....BTW to anyone that has tried yet will using mods with the steam version of this stop achievements?
It was a great game in its day, but at this point, there's no reason to get this over Torchlight II which will almost certainly be $5 during the winter sale. I looked back and found my original purchase info paying $19.99 for it in 2005... with Steam sales, that seems like a fortune now :pandashocked:
I had a lot of fun playing this game, Diablo style interface with a more cartoon and light hearted graphics style. Having the cat to send back weapons to sell was revolutionary at the time. but like Tomax mentioned, a 20$ game in 2005 was a great deal. That amount of money can get you 4 or 5 games today.
Did anyone ever win this?
I got really far and coudn't get to the end.

PS - on a side note, there is a strange mechanic in the game to where, if you die, you can appear "Nearby". Nearby could be 3 or 4 levels down, and if you immediately died again, then chose Nearby, and got placed 4 levels down, well, you were pretty much screwed.

This could be said about a lot of things people buy. There really isn't much reason for anyone to play anything besides Diablo II, since that game is still pretty much the best game this genre has to offer. As far as paying $20 for a game...just because you can get games cheaper on Steam doesn't mean that those games aren't worth more than you're getting them for. By all rights, when Runic Games made Torchlight II, they made a game that sells at $20 (when not on sale) that is worth at least twice that much, if not three times as much.

It's all relative to how much enjoyment you get out of it, of course, but for the most part I think that five bucks (the current price) is a pretty cheap price to pay for a game that has a lot of heart. This was very much Travis's love letter to the Diablo series, and it shows.

Spoiler:
It doesn't end. You just get to pick one item you own and make it an heirloom. I completed it numerous times and used the same ring every time. It took up the whole screen in stats when I moused over it.
