Exploration: Nomadic or base?
When in exploration do you think it is better to have a base or be nomadic?

I am a nomad. Get myself a decent size ship and "keep flying"
A base is okay if you can find an area that has some really resource rich asteroids to mine.

I founda asteroid with Iron and Uranium for my station. My station is just there to build ships be them small or large. My large ship have all I need is on it.

You're going to need to stay mobile in order to find all the ores at first. When you have the resources to build beacons and satelites, then you can start thinking about settling down. But the resources will still be few and far between if you're thinking about big projects.

I like bases. They can make use of solar power without being an absolute nuisance (solar & batteries are brutally heavy for little payoff).

I think nomadic is the way to go...

Tying yourself down to a static base gives you problems that I'd rather not deal with -

For starters you're going to have to lay down navigation bouys if you're going further than 50km from your start position.

Then of course you've got the energy cost of transporting gathered materials back to the base so that you can process them.

If you're on a multiplayer server it's going to be very difficult to hide your position, because those nav bouys you need to find your way back to your base will lead other players straight to it. And when they do find you, you can't relocate your main base of operations.

If you're going nomadic, you should do fine as long as your ship has auxilliary craft to fly out and investigate stuff. Essentially your main ship just gets built up and built up until it's pretty much a mobile space station anyway.

I was going to be nomatic, but I think you need a small base 1st to get things going unless you just use the basic Asteriod ship or one like it for a long time till you get enough supplies to make something good.

Now that there is GPS, you may not need beacons or antenna to remember where your base is. Does that change the equation at all?

I've been playing an infinite world with meteors, so unfortunately it's very dangerous for me to be out in the sun and traveling. Sadly meteors are a little over-powered, so you have to stay hidden or be torn to shreds.

Right now I hide inside a really big asteroid in a base. But I'm thinking of converting the base into a giant ship, then turning off meteors and become a nomad in a giant ship.

Its makes bases easier to find for their owners/faction members. But there is something to be said about nomadic life. But you will still need a starter base to build up that ship or a lot of forward thinking in the construction.

I perfer nomad myself! With a fully functioning "mothership" and one or two small craft on board, I have pretty good luck keeping them attached.

though I would love to get into some RP with a larger group (3 - 5) on one large ship and we all have roles to play; capt, engineer, medical officer, etc... and smaller ships to perfor important tasks like mining defense.

or maybe a group of pirates.... YARRRR!!!

Do space pirate go yar?

Me too! Yarrrr!

Where's the best place to recruit RP players?

Used to be base-centered in my first exploration game (where there were just 2 ores per rock and you had to survey and mark each rock with a beacon).

Since the GPS was released and ores are too way easy to find I tend to play nomadic. Getting my ship bigger is as fun as digging a hole out of the largest rock and filling it with outpost stuff.

Probably nomad, because you're exploring, not camping in one place and digging in a rock. I have an OP ship that I made just for this mode, which i will post in a little bit (it is already in workshop)

I prefer to build a base just because I enjoy the process, building cool bases with hangars and platforms and complicated layouts, or a base entirely hidden from the outside by building it entirely inside an asteroid, plus I just enjoy having a home base that expands over time.

You can build hangers on a moving ship too. I am attempting to do that now. I have build bases in the past.

The only reason I can think of to have a station is for use large ship projection building.
