I Noticed my buddy repainted his whole starting ship yesterday I assumed it was the same way but it didn't work I also tried changing the color and cutting down to the base brick and that didn't repaint it either,

I just selected the base brick, changed the color using "[" and "]" keys, moused over the brick I wanted to change, and right clicked. Worked for me.

That's for placing new bricks, i'm talking about repainting bricks that are already placed.

How to color in survival:
Select a brick for placement, like Light Armor Block. Hover over the part you want to color. [ and ] change color. P opens color picker. Middle Mouse applies the color.

You must be in block placement mode, like with the Light Armor Block selected, or it won't color anything.

Shift-P sets the chosen colour to that of the currently aimed at block.

Not really a rule against it.

To expand on the painting a bit. If you hold Shift while you middle mouse to paint, it will cover a large area, Ctrl+Middle Mouse will a cover a slightly smaller area.
Also dont forget that P opens the paint pallet for custom colors. You arent limited to the preset colors using [ and ].
They have also expanded the colorable (?) blocks, so you can color the enclosed cockpit, antenna, battery, doors, etc...

Another thing to think about, are you playing on the bugged to hell asteroids scenario....as color selecting was another thing that was not working on there the last time I ran that map.
