Are you trying to connect through the Steam Server browser or joining from in game?

from the game, how can i do through the steam server browser?
orb Jun 23, 2014 @ 2:08pm
You can create a shortcut pointing to:
steam://connect/IP_ADDRESS:27016
to connect directly to a server at given IP_ADDRESS. Optionally change 27016 to another port number if you changed it to different on your server.

The shortcut will launch the game automatically and will try to join the server when it can connect to it.

@orb: And where do you type this ?
EDIT: Ok, I've found how to. I did :
1.Right click on my windows desktop
2. New > Shortcut
3. When it asks where the link will point to, enter the text "steam://connect/IP_ADDRESS:27016" as said orb, of course, by replacing IP_ADDRESS
4. Launch it.

You can also type the line "steam://connect/IP_ADDRESS:27016" in your browser same as an adress. It will start SpaceEngi and join, also works if game is already running.

How does steam know wich game it has to start if it only gets an ip and port to connect to with this link?
orb Jun 30, 2016 @ 1:08pm
The Steam's server browser determines the game upon connecting to the address and then launches that appropriate game.

Because the Port says what game it is. 27015 is for Garry's Mod.

No. It. Does. Not. See the answer above : Steam's server browser determines the game upon connecting to the address and then launches that appropriate game.

I can setup my Rustserver using port 27015. In fact my Hl2:dm Server runs at 27015. As far as i know all Source games are using this Port. So the port doesnt say anything about the game at all...

But that still doesnt tell me how is steam knowing it. As i understand your answer steam is connecting to the server and asking it wich game it runs. And the opens the correct game according to the answer of the server?

And also: wow...
- the op is from 2014
- my question is from 2016

- got an reaction in 2019

....

No doubt the steam software does some handshaking with whatever server is responding at that IP adress and port. If nothing responds then it is probably a firewall/port-forwarding issue (could be on either side), or the IP was dynamically assigned by ISP and no longer valid, or the server simply down. If the response is unintelligeble to Steam, then it is probably not a Steam game server. (I don't know how this can be viewed, maybe there is a log some where) And if it manages to interogate the Steam software on the server side it can exchange and test the game unique identifier of the game the server is hosting. And then start a game session connection.
