You can build trains (& tracks) on planets, in vanilla!
I love this game for what's possible in it, although there's no rail block yet, so I designed a way to build a train system (of sorts) for planets - Although it works best in a creative mode world with "destructible blocks" and "stations project to voxel" turned off in advanced settings ('cause of SE's restrictions). It's kind of a useless (but fun) "toy" for now.

The track is made from modular blueprints which can be pasted into a creative world, which I've released as a collection - This also includes points/switches and turntables, and blank "locomotive" and "wagon" chassis so people can also build thier own trains:

Existing vehicles I made can be also added to tracks (more are coming later):

(There's a world showing off what's possible with it too)

Monorail-like trains have wheel suspensions arranged around a T-shaped track - "Locomotives" can pull or push "wagons" around gentle corners and over gradients. If the rail system was more suitible for survival, trains would be really efficient - 100,000 kg of linked vehicles can move up to 250 km/h using just 3% of power from a single small ship reactor. There's potential for solar powered trains.

The restrictions this thing has makes me wonder how a rail block would work if KSH devs bothered to put something like that into the game - I mean someone else has already come up with a maglev like rail mod using modified gravity generators, but wouldn't physics break components at high speeds, particularly on corners and gradients? I also wonder if static angled grids are possible while still being linked to straight grids. (And I don't mean through rotors)

Anyway, I'd like to see what people do with the track blueprints I made, but perhaps the interest for this sort of thing isn't really there. :\

I was planning to do the same soon. It's really cool!

It's broken, there's no curves and you can't even go up/down on ramps.

Heh, I made this thread simply to show off this train set thing I made. :P Not the cleverest of dupes.

It used to work... Back in 2015, when Space Engineers had different mechanics. :P I've not upgraded my PC in a long time and it isn't powerful enough to run the game anymore, so I haven't touched this project in about 2 years.

For now, you can check the vids I made to see what once was possible - And maybe it is still possible, I dunno. Why not play with this idea yourself and try and make it work again? :)

:steamfacepalm:

anyways... I remember this train, awesome work!

i have seen ppl use cameras and scripts to guide along a rail. but most were made for special instances so u will pro have to do a bunch urself or pay someone to help u out or some such thing

Hi guys,
I'm receiving alerts about ''Necroing'' old thread and noticed OP's DarkHoodness comment.

DarkHoodness, if you want me to lock this one => Just ask and I will :big_lock:
