If you need actual reasons and goals for interplannetary exploration, you'll have much more fun in Empyrion.
Is there anything to see or find that you need to do other things?
Also, I've played Empyrion... a lot. It seems to have the same issue, really. Once you have a big ship built in that game the only reason to go to other planets is for resources to keep your big ship going.
I really hope Starfield gets this part.
1 - Become Rich to build the best ships of the game that are the "Nuclear ships" that uses Reactors + Uranium as power = those give the best ship concepts of the game.
2 - Find all the Rich ore spots of the game, that is where all ores can be found close to each other, like some areas have all ore withing 1Km.
3 - Find all the Easy Biomes, well also be able to survive at Easy, Medium and Hard Biomes.
4 - Find the Warship solution, so to be able to destory a Pirate stations using a small block ship with minimum of damages done to you and the enemy, and doing so while going very very close to the enemy = that is the real challenge because it's too easy at long range.
5 - Find the best setups/solutions on all sorts of stations, ships and helper Drones.
Thanks for the response and I love the game, but that translates to "use your imagination" to me, lol. I get what you're saying though, but maybe adding places to visit, blocks to buy from vendors on other planets, unlocks that you can only get from specific factions, etc... to give us even a slight reason to go into space in "space engineers".
It just seems ironic that you only go to space for a few minutes to find materials to bring back to your planet and really have no reason to go back.
Same thing for Star Citizen, No Mans Sky etc.
Once you get to end-game goal, there isn't much left.
You either go PvP or go home and start over.
As for Empyrion, try Reforged Eden mod.
+ They told the community to keep creating new Portal Vote Feedbacks (Petitions) so they can choose from, so don't be shy to let them know.

Have ideas on how to improve Space Engineers?🤓
Leave feedback or cast your vote on the most pressing Space Engineers topics!
_________
Note
-> Important to know on Portal Feedback (suggestion) :
1 - Feedbacks must have only one idea in for the vote system to work properly, more than one idea to vote on will become unusable.
2 - A good title that shows what is in to vote on will give it a better visibility to have more votes.

I will add :
You may be at creating scenarios / become a scenario author ?
Try this one I shared especialy to show player that it's doable without using any of the scenario tools.
For example
Story scenario :

Race track scenario :

I hardly think NMS should be in that list. The majority of the game is in space and other planets, systems, space stations, etc. Star citizen SHOULD be the same, but we'll see.
Yes, used Reforged last time, it added quite a bit the game was lacking end-game. Thanks for the suggestion.
In case you don't know me I must specify :
I am not a SE Dev but forum Moderator community helper/game tester and I help the SE community since 2013 because it's my Fav Sandbox game on Steam.
-> I collect the most talked about every months to send to the SE team and they gave me the [Dev] Tag so I can be admin of the Workshop to help more.
Thanks :)
I really appreciate the input. Scenarios are interesting, but not really what you want on a dedicated server. But, thanks :) I'm not hurting for things to do, I'm just wishing there was more to do in the game itself to give us a reason to build specifications in ships that have decent shields, can withstand specific gravity fields, can hold drones, etc.
Selfless of you. Thanks for helping out. This is also one of my fav. games. Definitely top 20
Severs have "Block limit" enabled where we can build only one ship and one station, we must join with friends to be able to build on all planets, moons and space.
+
Better go MP in a premade PVP scenario than going MP just to build, in my opinion.
There are things you can complete like Scenarios and individual missions from the Contracts block.
As much as I agree with your definition of sandbox... I disagree that you set your own goals when it comes to standard content to compel you to actually do what the game is based on, in this case: Being in space.
See where I'm going there?
Maybe I"m just not as imaginative as you guys are and need a concrete reason to go explore... maybe I'm looking for materials or new unlocks or new people to trade with or new types of turrets or weapons, technology that boosts my current defenses, etc.
But, that's me. I was simply asking if they had added anything :)
Whether you agree with it or not that's what we do with Sandbox games: We create our own goals. If we didn't create our own goals there would be no goal.
