https://www.reddit.com/r/spaceengineers/comments/7wa3qw/new_ore_patches_harder_to_see/
(This page is ranked pretty high in Google when searching for "space engineers reddit ore patches hard to see")
The link has most of the images from the time dark ore patch colors were blended into the terrain, it may be a little dated but I still find it helpful. You should be able to find 2 types of ore per location or more. It seems patches are at least 2km apart or more.
In space, with the one of the latest patches, it seems asteroids typically have two types of ores.
Ore detectors have a limited range, by default most block ore detectors are at half detection range strength. Large grid ore detectors have the longest range. Some ore on planets or asteroids are deeper than the basic hand drill detector range or small grid ore detector range.
When you find an ore location it may be useful to create a new GPS marker at that location with information regarding the ore located.
