And I think it helps Modders on adding new cool weapons to the game that is limited to bullets and missiles in Vanilla.
Info +
YouTube video Tuto for Weaponcore can be found that will show you more on how to lock target that will show on screen for example, while we need a LCD + Scripts in Vanilla.

Edit: wheel joke :)
It also allows Lasers, Tracking missiles, minefields, EWAR (EMP, Anti-Smart (Flares), Anti-Jump Drive, push\pull fields, DOT), beams that curve, animated projectiles, flak fields, cluster-weapons, drones and many more features such as Multi-Turrets (1 block, multiple weapons capable of independently tracking, say 7 turrets firing at 7 targets at the same time, inside a 1x1x1 box)
Combat used to be extremely short-ranged and one dimensional without it in the past.
Could anyone recommend some good weapon mods for it?

Northwind also has some pretty traditional weapons

Aryx for variety if you don't mind some questionable balance

And more
Not a bug, design feature.
The most optimized block type is a sorter, which doesn't have the normal manual control button in the terminal - they instead are still able to be manually controlled via the Target Painter, and Manual-Control modes in the Toolbar.
Most turrets are also far better at landing blows than a player regardless.
You can check their page and see which mods they use for example.
