Gold and silver deposits tend to be deeper down so you usually need a large grid detector to find them though.
the "Desert" Biome is one where we can see the ore sports with our eyes and be able to find faster, also ice lakes ore spots are easy to see
Platinum: Only in asteroids and moons
All other ores: Everywhere
Also, trading stations can have ingots for sale, including uranium.
As an alternative source you can also salvage stuff. For example, thrusters contain metal grids that can give you cobalt. Or you can just repurpose the metal grids. Like, grind down your starting pod thrusters and build some cargo containers for your base. Other nice finds include ion thrusters which will give you platinum.
A little piracy now and then can go a long way...
So you can actualy find structures or npcs on the planet?
I am allways starting on a earth like planet. I have never found anything except a trading station. Are there pirates on earth? Or other ships or anything else worth discovering?
However, you *can* have enemies and exploration stuff on planets as well, if you like. And quite easily as well:

From the above collection take the "Modular Encounters Spawner". That's the engine that makes everything else work, so you always need that. Then just pick and choose any or all the others depending on your taste for action and danger and how hard you want it to be. No setup needed just include the mods and it's done. You don't have to start a new game.
If you haven't tried any of Lucas's AI opponents before, then maybe start by picking just the spawner and the "Surface Occupation" part and see how it goes. You can always add more later. The "Surface Occupation" will spawn different hostile bases on planets so just go out and explore, and see what you find.
