Daikatana
Daikatana patch 1.3, fixes loading screen ticks, adds HD resolutions, corrects bot AI nodes, etc.
Install Daikatana patch 1.3 and come to play some multiplayer. Please?

https://bitbucket.org/DGibson/daikatana-1.3/wiki/Home

Daikatana community has produced a patch that updates Daikatana with new features and fixes numerous bugs from the game. With 1.3 you can get HD resolutions (I think up to 4k) and other stuff.

Features:
  • Corrects issues regarding the V-Sync
  • Removes the "tick" sound from loading screens
  • Updated render
  • Adds support for widescreen resolutions of 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratio
  • Adds support for custom resolutions
  • Adds support for additional mouse buttons
  • Adds glowing textures
  • Adds 32-bit textures
  • Updates maps regarding certain map bugs
  • Gamespy's master server has been switches to QTracker's master server
  • Corrects AI path and nodes to a great extent
  • Companion bots have more life and don't die so easily, and on easy difficulty setting these sidekicks are immortal
  • AND MORE! Refer to the README.txt inside the package

Remember to adjust the brightness and gamma of the game. Patch also fixes the multiplayer master server which went broken after Gamespy pulled the plug from all their game servers recently.

Steam's version of the Daikatana has already been updated to 1.2 which is the last official patch Ion Storm released for the game.

Updating the Daikatana to version 1.3

WARNING: Save games made in 1.2 are NOT compatible with 1.3. If you're deep into the game the and you want the community patch 1.3 you need to use "map" command to jump where you were and then use cheats to give yourself some weapons and ammunition. Alternative is to restart the whole single-player campaign.

Download:

DK_EXE_022017_FULL (Windows pre-Beta version from 2017-02-20 FULL PACKAGE):
http://dk.toastednet.org/DK13/DK_EXE_022017_FULL.EXE

It's a self-extracting installer. After you've downloaded the package you install it to Daikatana's folder. If you have Steam installed to it's default path Daikatana's folder is located in:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Daikatana\

(or if you're running 64-bit Windows):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Daikatana\

If it asks if you would like to overwrite any files, do so and overwrite the files. End result is that when Daikatana starts you can see in the right bottom corner of the red area in main menu "1.3" instead of "1.2". You're also able to access for example the HD resolutions from the Video menu.

If you start playing multiplayer with Daikatana community, you're also going to need:

dkcustom.rar (Pak9)[dk.toastednet.org]

You extract that package into:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Daikatana\data\

I don't know if I am allowed to mirror these files like this but unless the developers of the project come up and tell me that I should not do this then I guess it's OK.

Reporting issues with the patch

This is important! If you guys encounter bugs and stuff go report them:

EDIT: Links updated to a newer version of the 1.3 beta patch. If you upgrade from old version make sure that you don't have these files in your maps-folder by deleting them: http://daikatananews.net/dk13/maps_not.png

EDIT (20.02.17): I've updated the links and made small changes to wording. Patch 1.3 has an installer nowadays which makes it easier to download and install these updates.

This is great news. I really wanted to like this when it was released way back when, but the buggy AI with your companions broke it for me. I have seen that the multiplayer was quite good, but I was on dial up {and not good dial up either} so that was problematic for me. Gotta pick this up and give it another chance.

The key to success in singe player was to keep the npc's at the start of the level until they are needed :)

That's actually a bad idea for many reasons. First of all the companion bots are more useful than they're a riddance. And secondly the problem people have is that Daikatana is not an egocentric FPS game. And third, you'd have to navigate through out the levels twice with second time walking the bot over making it slow and tedious job.

If you play Daikatana like Doom, you're doing it wrong. It's better to advance room per room with the bots instead of complete maps. Maps in Daikatana can be fairly long after all. Daikatana expects that you will cooperate with the bots, share available resources with them, and do things together with them. If you don't use the sidekicks the game also becomes more difficult than what it already is. Granted that you need to actually learn how to control them.

The bot AI in Daikatana was very ambitious for its time (and perhaps even for today's standards) but it has loads of bugs. If the devs would have had more time to iron the bugs out and play test the game better who knows how the story might have turn out to be. The AI works majority of the time but people don't really notice of that. However when the bots don't work people remember extremely well the frustration they have with the bots. :ss2heart:

I think it's kind of impressive that unlike in games like Ghost Recon or Bioshock: Infinite: Daikatana's bots are constantly there, they make taunts, they are physically there sharing the space and resources with you, they make fairly impressive jumps through out the game, run and gun with you, pick certain things automatically, and assist you with various things, and ocasionaly, just maybe, "maybe", fail and ♥♥♥♥ on their pants because of a AI node being inside the ladder instead of on top of the ladder, node not instructing bots to jump out of a water fountain, walk over a cliff to their death, drown in water, or they open a door and get stuck to it and die hard. :D: :D: :D:

You should have been the PR for the studio on release. :p

I had more fun leaving the bots for extended periods of time, unless the map was open without obstacles or tight hallways. That is mostly why greece and norway were the most popular episodes among the people that did play the game.

I've played and enjoyed the game on release, never bashed it as part of hype, but as a fan, you are overselling the game, and downplaying the flaws.

Nothing wrong with that, just needs to be kept in context. This game is not for everyone. It has technical flaws and game design shortcomings, varied level design quality, spikey difficulty and an unforgiving save system.

Its a game for advanced/curious gamers looking for challenge and , and 90's retro gamers. Your descriptions kinda make it sound like its on par with modern triple AAA releases, which I a doubt most people who don't know the full Daikatana development, release, and reception context, would agree with.

I need to apologize that this is a bit too long message. Sorry!

Oh, god. I wouldn't take that ungrateful job. :D:

If you happen to read my messages more, you'd know that I'm not "overselling the game, and downplaying the flaws". If something is broken (like the savegem system) I've written about it as it is and told why it's broken. When there are faults in maps (like the ones in e1m7b and e4m4b), I've been talking about those faults as they are. And if something is well done and should be taken into consideration, I've mentioned it. If something requires explaining, I've tried to explain that stuff.

I still remember the crashing issues of 1.0, and the problems regarding the performance (which were fixed in the patches 1.1 and 1.2). The patch sizes were very large and installation time extremely long. And it was just BS in 1.0 that the sidekicks couldn't use hosportals.

I was actually pretty pissed off at the time. But I've later learned to appreciate the game more. Especially because current FPS games are mostly so lame.

I've been telling that this is "expert fps" that doesn't explain majority of things to players, that has no tutorials, and how you're expected to just know these things before starting playing game. And how they need to understand that Daikatana was made by people who didn't have the technical skills to make a game like this. It has bugs and design issues and players need to learn to live with them. And I mostly agree with what you're saying about the game in your message.

Well, if a person come asking help for Daikatana and is willing to give it a honest chance and wants to know how the game works... I don't care what's that player's background. I think it's good thing to explain the game to him if he wants to know and is willing to spend some time to learn it.

And if he plays few hours of it and doesn't like it then that's all fine and good. But no matter what game is in question, if a guy starts it, plays 15 minutes of the game, and then gives 0/10 review then he pretty much makes a fool of himself in my eyes.

Oh, and if you feel that one of my descriptions somewhere is overly positive, then it's actually pretty good that you're giving me feedback about it. Because it's true that the game is not "on par with modern triple AAA releases" that are highly accessible. If something I've written says that or gives the impression then I need to edit it the tone of the message since it's not mostly true.

My remarks about the modern AAA titles being worse than Daikatana are mostly sarcasm. But in my honest opinion I do find majority of modern FPS games extremely boring, linear, short, incompetently made, unfun, and so very slow with no real innovations being made. Majority of the issues come from the fact that modern AAA titles are developed so that you can control them with a gamepad's analog sticks on gaming consoles, the pacing is poor, they force scripted sequences on you making you go in the tune of the bots and not bots go in your tune, and so on. Even id Software betrayed me by making the RAGE which is yet-another-stop-n-pop-shooter.

I could totally argue about why Daikatana is a fundamentally more fun and generally better game than the "Medal of Honor" game that gave the incentive for me to start playing Daikatana again after all these years and start writing about Daikatana on these forums.

But everything aside, I'd just like to have some people to play multiplayer with me every now and then. That's what I'm after here. That's where the Daikatana really shines at. The multiplayer portion of the game works really well.

And if you want to know how I feel about seeing people "playing" and "talking" about the Daikatana (Especially at Youtube)... This parody that starts in 1:00 mark is very suitable demonstration:

I think the Greece and Norway are popular episodes for many other reasons also. For example they're nice change of pace in the game. Weapons are cool and the colourscheme is more acceptable.

multiplayer was fun. a few years ago they released a multiplayer only version of Daikatana. was fun to play; Daikatana Deathmatch

I found that Daikatana is a lot more fun without the AI. Sure, you're a bit overpowered bc the maps are balanced around having the teammates, but I think it makes the game more fun. I've found that you alone are actually a lot more powerful and effective than you and the teammates are, which means the bots are basically pointless and only exist just to handicap you.

Same with the cutscenes. You honestly lose very little by not having them because of how stupid, worthless, and time-consuming they are. Without them and the bot partners, the game is a pretty decent 90s FPS. Not as good as Unreal and HL1, but better than Quake 2.
