Bump. I recently put in a KVM switch and moved to HDMI audio as a result. Banished, which I've played for many years, apparently has no audio capability through HDMI, even though that's the only audio device on my machine today. No other game has shown this issue to date.

I play Banished on my 32 in 4K TV with HDMI connection. The sound is fine. However, I must have the TV connect and turn on before turning the laptop on.

Yeah--well, I can just plug headphones directly into my game rig if needed, but my work from home gig require me to use a laptop of theirs, so of course I had to get all complicated and do the heavy duty kvm switch approach.

I haven't found any other app or game that cannot transmit sound out my machine's display port (which I then convert to an HDMI plug for the switch). I came across this thread talking about sound over hdmi, and also found a few threads on reddit talking about the same issue, so figured I'd bump this and see what showed up. :D

Wasn't necessary expecting the OP, but hey, nice to see you!

Thanks for the suggestion. In my case, everything stays on all the time (laptop, game rig, both monitors and audio system)--and this is the only game where the sound fails to work. Oh well, I'll keep toying with it and see what I can figure out.
