No one is removing resources
I just started playing (great impression so far, by the way, besides this issue). I played the tutorial, and just started a New Game.

I designed a area of trees and rocks to have all resources removed, while I assigned a few builders to go build some houses meanwhile. But even after a year, no one ever touched the area I designed to be cleared.

My population just wanders off randomly accross the map, never cutting a single tree. Am I forgetting to do something?

How many people do you have assigned as laborers? Those are the ones that remove resources from the map.

do you have enought laborers?(builders wont carry items to houses they build and only laborers clear areas) also check whether you have enought space for resources and enought resources?

I assigned two people as builders, the remaining as labourers (6 I believe).

Have you tried increasing the priority of the area?

Do they have to cross a stream to get to them. Because they'll need a bridge first.

Didn't try changing priority. Will try that when I get back home later.
No stream to be crossed, it was right besides their starting area.

Have you designated an area for the stockpile? I forgot to. :P

1. stockpiles are required for hauling, it might be full as well.
2. make sure you have laborers, they are the haulers.
3. it may take a little while for people to not be busy with something else (clearing building zones might be done before the clear area task.

A small input on the matter. When you have builders in your profession tab, and they have nothing to do (all building is finished or there is just a lack off resources) they will do laborer tasks like hauling, chopping trees, mining surface stone,....

So as long as you have space in your stockpile, your builders will help gathering the resources.

Increasing priority is usually the end-all tool in this situation, just make sure you really need to use it, and only use it in small areas. It seems like clearing areas is a low priority job.

If you click on something being built you will see the first box is for clearing the area, this can stop a lot of things being built (sometimes I think they are automatically removed, but otherwise I use the remove tool and use higher priority if needed).

Have you built a stockpile? I had a problem where I forgot to build a stockpile and so my workers would chop down resources but wouldn't do the actual building. WIthout a stockpile the AI gets weird, though it doesn't matter that much as stockpiles cost no labor to build.

It seems my issue was that I laid down too many building at once, right at the start.

Thanks, all!

What does that mean? I have50 labourers and 38 builders not removing the resources in 2 taverns and a barn for 20 years. =(
I hope you realize this topic is 2 years old

Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly. But villagers in Banished may idle for a number of reasons, like unhappiness, or trying to get to stuff that they have no pathing for (make sure you don't order them to build or remove resources across a river or mountains without completing a bridge or tunnel beforehand).
Even then, there are moments when your settlers will decide to wander off to the corners of the map instead of doing anything else. It's frustating. :(

Maybe put up a screenshot so people can see what is happening.

A tarvern does not have stuff removed from it (unless demolishing it) in the usual sense - the villagers visit it to directly consume the ale and traders take the ale if Trade Posts request it. You won't ever see ale in any other building.
