There are tons and tons of "city/colony" builder games coming to the market, in EA, etc, etc... And, there's plenty of older titles that are really, really, worth playing. Children of the Nile, the Ceasar series, all the ones mentioned here, etc.

For myself, I generally try to check what's new or up-and-coming using youtubers who tend to cover that kind of stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/user/SplatterCatGaming

Splattecat almost exclusively covers "indie games" and has a good many "colony builder" indie game vids to look through.

Raptor tends to do a lot of building/crafting sorts of Let's Plays.

Nookium is similar to Raptor, but also does related stuff like RPGs/etc.

Also, while I haven't played them, I have looked at them pretty closely and they seem very similar to "Banished" in their overall style:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/858810/Dawn_of_Man/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/684450/Surviving_the_Aftermath/

Notes: Of the above, all of them have their "issues" right now, AFAIK. There are legitimate complaints, here and there, and then there are some that aren't so legit. :) Of the most serious would be "LiF:Forest Village" surrounding some claims of glitches or bugs and how these weren't fixed before the developers "abandoned" it. Also, while some are "post-apocalyptic" they still have a decent sort of "Banished feel" in some respects.

PS: Not sure how all this will parse, but I thought the direct links would be appreciated more than truncated ones.

There are many games that have spawned using the survival city building model from Banished. Loads of copy cat games for sure. off the top of my head. Banished lol. oh okay fine, Ostriv, seems to be coming along, although it is still in early release phase. But since it is being built by a solo developer, it could be a lot longer to be completed, and it will allow mods eventually. Theres another one similar to Banished, uhm, its prehistoric village building, as I can't call it city building, its primitive, but I can't recall the name.

I would dare to say that several of the large conversion mods that Banished has, give it a pretty good feeling of being a new and different game as well.

Maybe Maiden4meldin is referring to Life is Feudal: Forest Village.

Or Dawn of Man.

Other games off the top of my head, that I've heard mention in the same vein of Banished are: Frostpunk, Planetbase, Endzone, Manor Lords, Timberborn, and to some extent, Rimworld.

All these games are in their own various stages of release though, but check them out and see if you like them!

Sumerians is another in early access.

Builders of Egypt (not out yet) had a demo I tried, though I didn't really give it a long enough try.

Kingdoms and Castles reminds me of Banished, but it's simpler and features waves of enemies attacking your colony.

Foundation is very close, but also very new. You have to be ok with the minecraft style as well.

Ostriv is probably the closest and best game like Banished currently available. It is very good, but it's still early in development (alpha 3), it's not going to be finished for years, and updates are slow as molasses in January. Not recommended if you expect more than about two updates a year and that's being generous.

It's only similar to Banished on the surface, though. Underneath the systems are much more complex and you have to manage things like an economy, seasonal work forces, livestock, crop rotation, laborer limits, etc. and that's just the tip of the iceberg of what's coming in the future.

That it's a solo project is a common misconception. It used to be before the Steam release but there's a few more people working on it now.

EDIT: Oh yeah. Foundation. That's a really good game. Cartoony, which I don't particularly care for, but some of the best animations ever.

Not recently that I'm aware of. Mbutton15 has a good point about the builder series coming out this year. There are 4 games from Egypt to China releasing sometime in 2021. You could play an older game like Anno 1404 or something like that, but I feel like Banished is a better game, imo.

I looked to see if i could find a game for Roman builder, and the only one I found even close is Civ City Rome. That was released in 2008 though, so it's also pretty old. It's not as similar to Banished, but you could try it i suppose if you were really dying to play a Roman City Builder.

Not many good ones, no, but there is a lot of crap out there not too many have heard of. There's probably more on the horizon than are actually released, half of which will probably fail. Here's one I found recently, but it's also not released yet and nobody knows much about it.

Devs aren't saying much about it either but they're reputable. Sure does have some nice screenshots.

Ew, thanks for the link on Farthest Frontier ROFL. I hadn't seen this one yet.

Completely agree, very similar gameplay once you get past the retro visuals.
K&Cs is quite a bit easier though, IMO. It's not as easy to wreck your chance of survival, and you can turn the vikings off if you just want to build.

Re the style OP mentioned, If you know your way around an emulator you may even want to look at powermonger.
Banisha Feb 14, 2021 @ 4:14am
Medieval Dynasty, but it's still early in development too. You can see a let's play on Youtube of the suggested titles to decide what you like before purchase one.

Another one is Depraved.

Kingdoms Reborn is very much the child of Banished

An older game might be Imperium Romanum.
If you get it when it is on sale, it is dirt cheap.

Oh ... just checked it is currently on sale, selling for $2.99 US Dollars.
