And actually any worker unable to work at his assigned job (no materials, or limit reached) will act as a labourer.
Do you mean the farm has a stop sign above it? If so, click on the farm and set the farm to work.
but anyway it wont let me press that work button on the farm

Click on the pitchfork that say 'work' to take the farm out of 'stopped' state. Then click on the question mark to assign a crop (e.g., beans, wheat, pumpkin, whatever you have).
