Here's some facts from my town at point of reaching the achievement:
From my trade post I had bought cherry, potato, wheat, squash and bean seeds. Bean is usually the quickest to reach harvest. Squash will last longest in the cold temperatures. After squash, corn and wheat survive longest in the cold and the rest start dying the earliest. I also bought sheep and chickens. I got the sheep so I could make warm coats with the leather from my hunters.
Education is very important as educated workers help increase returns from crop fields, etc.
I didn't even build a market. Probably because the houses were dotted all around the map so I had lots of little storage barn settlements.
And remember it's not a race. It took me 22 years to reach the 50 target. My population continued to grow and topped 100 by the end (42 years).
Has enough space for 5 forrester-hunter-gatherer hubs, 4 herbalist, 12 barns, 15 crop fields of various sizes (10x10 to 10x5), 5 fishing docks, 4 orchards (13x13 and 13x9), 3 pastures (16x10 and 2 20x10), 3 woodcutters, 2 blacksmiths, 2 tailors, 2 mines, 1 quarry, 2 schools, 1 church, 1 hospital, 1 trading post, townhall, cementery. Most of the building can be built near river so you can minimize the need for well (if you play with disaster on). Can support up to 200 people.
I only buy wheat seed to cover all food variety. Trade fish, vernision, iron tools and hide coats for ale.
Start food production asap. Gatherer, crop field, fishing dock and hunter. Each cattle need an area of 20 tiles, so build a pasture 160 tiles large (16x10). Pasture will starts producing next year.
Not much to add to the above anyway.
