Another reason is that I have never been able to successfully deal with infestation, or fire. Doesn't matter how many workers, labors, wells I have, the herd will always die, building will always be destroyed. And, I have never had a tornado even with game last more than 200 years.
You will always lose the initial building to fire. The trick is to layout buildings/wells in such a way as to prevent mass destruction should a fire breakout. If I only lose 2 or 3 buildings to fire then I see that as a job well done. To lose just one building is a bonus.
You shouldn't really lose any animals to infestation. Provided you have a spare pasture then immediately move the animals there. To help prevent re-infestation I completely destory and rebuild the infested pasture before moving animals back in.
Crops I force a harvest and just change to a new crop selected for next season. Orchards are my biggest pain but only because I grow several plots of the same type together (to supply my tavern) as the infection always seem to spread across all fields. I've even had it happen when all fields have been 5 squares apart. Note I only lose the infected field when I mix tree types.
