Maybe there isn't enough room because of the road.
Fimbultyr Oct 3, 2016 @ 2:46pm
Do you have some building on either side? May the slope is to high too

i tried removing the road, up to two blocks further back. and no there's no building on either side other than the foundations you see

I've never seen a bridge size of just 4 so maybe it's too short ??

Occasionally I've had bridges I couldn't build even though there's been buildable squares each side. I put it down to slope to steep and was usually able to build close by (which you have done anyway !!).

i'm able to build bridges as small as 3 on other parts of that tiny stream though.

Oh, I forgot. I did once have to build a bridge 2 squares long to join seemingly already connected land - see below !!

But further to the right of it you can see the normal bridge size I get over small streams.

I think the problem lies with the other side of the river to the road.

It you can place a road you should be able to place a bridge.

Is it safe to assume you have also tried starting the bridge from both sides of the stream? And to the left and right of the center road tile as shown in the pic? Was your intent to build 3 short bridges side by side there to match the 3 wide road?

Judging by the hours you have in Banished (I check before I give advice about games, new player and expirenced player solutions tend to be different) I feel like it is likely you have tried multiple options of where to place the starting tile for the bridge. I know I have had to start some farther from streams to get them to take, but you did say you tried 2 tiles further back; or was that just removing some of the road tiles?

On another note, if you haven't checked it out already you may like the "Stone Bridge" Mod if you were intending to do 3 bridges side by side to match your road. It's just a stone bridge 3 tiles wide. Nothing else.

@jensenthecat I am able to place a road on both sides of the stream, where the bridge ends.

@Opt_0™ I have indeed tried placing my layout starting from both sides. My intent was to build only a single bridge, in the the middle of the 3 wide road. I'm able to build a bridge adjacent to the uppermost road, but not in the middle, nor below, despite there being no obstruction for either.
Yes, I removed roads up two blocks further back to make sure they were not obstructing my bridge, and also tried placing the layout from that point.

The reason why my road was 3 wide in the first place was only because I wanted to show a seperation between residential area and town services area, and create something that seemed a bit like a small city square. I don't usually build 3 wide bridges, but I would still use the mod you suggested just for this occasion, if I didn't feel that I'd still be unable to use it in this circumstance. The fact that 2/3 of the width of my road isn't allowing for a bridge to be built seems like it would obstruct the stone bridge just the same.

^ Hmm, that does sound frustrating. I am sorry you can't get it to work out. I have looked at a few terrain deforming mods, but I avoid anything that adds new mechanics to the game like that. I personally LOVE Banished. And have put far too many hours into it so I understand the frustration of a minor detail disrupting a larger plan. It's a shame you can't put two bridges adjacent to the center road tile on either side. And yes, you're right, if you can't put a single bridge there I doubt the Stone Bridge would overcome it. Bummer.

Well if you are interested in some other mods that are mostly aesthetic, or a few minor alteration mods I have a "Collection" of Banished Mods I use. One of them lets you put in little items like barrels, signs, fences, etc. If you are trying to make "areas" of town (which it sounds like) you may like the items mod too. I use it all the time to help fill out the details of a town.

Between the stone road and the 4-tile bridge, there is one unbuildable tile on both side. On the left, it seems to be a little too steep. Might have been created when you build the road. On the right, it seems to be a river bank/river tile which should be where the bridge end, but it's higher than the other side. I believe that both end of the bridge have to be on the same level.

This might happen often when you have steep slope on both end.

@pdoan8: That makes sense.

It seems that Fimbultyr was on the right track, and pdoan8 was spot on. The issue was indeed with a difference in slope/height on either side of the bridge. Using my "level terrain" mod I leveled both of the "starting squares" (the lighter green/red squares) on each side, and although it looks slightly unnatural, it now allows me to build a bridge.

@pdoan8 However, it wasn't due to when I created the road. The first image in the original post was taken before I ever placed a road on the left side. I only placed a road to show that the terrain allowed for road and structures to be built on it. Either way, it was indeed too high on the left and that was the root of the issue.

Thank you for all of your answers. Next time this happens to me I'll know why and how to fix it.
