Livestock herds dying
Why do some of my livestock herds slowly die out till there's none left? I have 2 workers in all of them and it seems like one herd always dies off

Since 6.2(I think that's the latest version) I have that problem with Friesian cows.

There seems to be a problem with Friesians and Kralyerg is looking at a way of fixing it. It was created when CC decided that Beef Cows, which don't give milk, should give more meat.

I also experienced this problem in vanilla game, in a small pasture with only 5 sheep, one after another just disappeared, when I had only 1 left, I killed it and destroyed the pasture.
But I still dunno, what caused this.

Maybe they were sick ? If they start dying off one by one they usually are.
I always keep and empty unmanned pasture for this reason.
Just empty the pasture ( as soon as the animals leave for the new one, the diesase is gone )
So moments after emptying it you can put them back in.
And the smaller the pasture the bigger chance of infestation.
Just what I've noticed while playing.

But wouldn't there be a notification or something, like when a disease breaks out or so? Never had one and never ever had another case of this, ok maybe one more in a small pasture, but not on bigger ones, not even smal bigger ones with like 10 sheep. NONE!

Livestock can get old an die. If you leave them at the trading post too long - they die. If you move them to a pasture just before they die, they will still die.

There is no notification I've seen for infection / diesase. It just happens.
And they do just die.
But usually if it's one after the other in short time...they are sick.

I've seen it. However it is completely random.
May happen once, several times or never.
You just have to keep on top of it.
One of hazards of playing at 5 X or 10 X...you see a pasture of healthy sheep... aminute later you scroll back over and all dead.
I play at 1 X and 2 X so it's easy for me to keep an eye on it.
I like the slow pace...I have no life and I can always watch TV while waiting for something to happen.
Tried playing at higher speeds...just couldn't do it..too weird. Maybe ANNO at 5 X, but not this game.

And like I said the sickness is completely random.

I also play vanilla and used to only put 1 worker on each pasture, but then my sheep started dying off. So I put 2 workers on sheep and they happily multiply and fill a 20x20 pasture. I am still able to use 1 worker on chickens/cows. This change seemed to happen around the time of the 1.0.6 upgrade coming out.

There is a notification for an infestation. (Say that three times fast) :)

I believe the only reasonable explanation is alien abduction.

There IS a notification for infection/infestation for plots/plantations/orchards AND pastures.
If they are slowly dieing, then most likekly you didn't catch the infestation message
Always have a spare pasture to "move" herds around to deal with it. Note that a 20x12 pasture with ONE herdsman is a good setup for any pasture.

Other reasons for herds being killed off:
* slider set too far to the left
* herdsmen living too far from the pastures
* too many butchers and not enough alternative foodsources -if food runs low, more slaughtering will occur
* your pastures are within the range of the hunters. The hunters do not discriminate, a cow within a fence is much easier target compared to traipsing through the forrest for days :)

RnRollie - I hope your post is a joke, but just in case you are serious: When a pasture has an infestation, it also gets a yellow fog. I've had Friesians slowly die and checked back for the message - there wasn't any. A 10x20 pasture works for 10 of any animal why make it 12x20? Butchers do not slaughter the animals - that magically happens when the # of livestock exceeds the capacity of the pasture. Butchers can only use meat produced by pastures as input. Hunters hunt deer (and ducks if you play CC); they don't go after the animals in pastures - that's not in the code.

I think he mentions 20x12 as being an optimum size for any of sheep, cows or chickens (as recommended by the size calculator - http://banishedinfo.com/t/Size_calculator/chickens) because you get 100% relative density no matter which animal you have in there.

Personally, I have a mix of 20x20 and 20x10 as I'm not worried about not being 100% efficient.

Thanks

I like 20 x 20 also. Seems to work well.
