what do chickens do?

i just spawned with some chickens what do i get from them? yes i am a newbie

Build a pasture and set livestock to 'Chicken'. They will move in and provide eggs and chicken meat. A full 20x20 pasture should provide 800+ combined eggs and chicken per year with just 1 worker.

they are the best livestock early on, because they immediatly produce some food.
later on they are the worst, since sheep and cows outperform them on food, and have additional different output.

Because Chickens don't produce Wool or Leather to make Clothing, I used to never use a map where I got Chickens as the livestock. However, in the last couple of releases of Colonial Charter, Chickens produce Feathers in addition to Eggs. Feathers + Reeds can be used to make Survival Coats so now I don't mind Chickens.
