Noob questions
Hi all, just started this game today. Did the tutorials, though they were pretty brief. I was wondering if there's a way to tell what buildings I've got under construction? Sometimes it's hard to tell because of forest and stone in the way, and I don't want to accidentally make a duplicate building because I forgot about the one I've got queued up.

Also, is there a way to make builders prioritise making a building over another? (and later be able to tell in the UI that they've prioritised it?)

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: to add, I know that there's a 'increase priority' button, but I'd like to know how that works exactly. How many workers will start working on the building? And if I drag the cursor over a building, and then drag it over another, will the 2nd one override the first one?

EDIT 2: another noob question! Does the 'remove resource' button destroy stuff like trees, or does it function the same way as 'harvest tree/stone' buttons? I.e - is it an effiecient way to clear areas that have trees and stone, moving them into the stockpile? Or: does it literally destroy everything in the area?

No real way to tell which buildings are under construction. What I do is move their info window to an out of the way place on the screen. That will pin the window open even when you lose focus on the building. So you can do that for several building and 'stack' all their info windows in one place.

The priority button is a last in, first out stack from what I remember. So the last thing you prioritised becomes top priority. I also think there is a little caveat to that as any 'remove resource' request seems to get done ahead of (or at least along side of) any building priority. You can cancel 'remove resource' requests if needed.

There a 4 'remove resource' buttons: remove tree, iron, stone or all 3.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it. I don't have much experience in this genre, so I'm playing on easy. Almost had everyone starve to death in year 2 lol, but think I've managed to salvage the situation.

I think I've underestimated the importance of laborers, they also carry food around, right? So if there's few active, then fishermen will end up carrying fish all the way back to town slowing everything down...

Absolutely. Labourers are the life blood of the settlement. Without them everything grinds to a halt.

Especially important to have when a teacher dies. If you only have one school and the teacher dies then all pupils become instant UNEDUCATED adults if there's no free labourer to replace them.

If you look at the buildings that are under construction, the tab will show how many workers are assigned to the building of that structure. If none are assigned yet, then it is in the queue to be built. If there are one or two assigned, then it is actively being worked on.

Best way to tell if a building is ready for construction, is when all the supplies are delivered to the building, then the foundation appears on the map and it is no longer just ghosted image.

Remove resources, will take all trees, stone and iron from the area you have assigned. Typically the Labourers you have assigned will prefer to do this work first, so be careful how much land you assign to begin with.

Labourer's and Builders, will always prioritize house buildings first. This is just an observation from the many hours of playtime on my part, so I tend to pause all my houses until my production buildings are completed. The first buildings you should have down, are always going to be your Forestry Node.

Forestry Nodes, include. Forester, Gathering Hut, and Hunting Cabin. I always place and pause my Marketplace, so the Market's radius is visible at all times, as having all of your houses inside the Market's radius is very important in this game. So skim the Forestry Node's Radius with the Market's radius, and build a Straight road to the Forestry node to the Marketplace. The at the cross section, build a road at the Radius intersections, and Place and Pause Four houses. I prefer to build all stone houses from the beginning as it requires much less firewood to heat those homes. I also place and build as a first structure the School, as having educated workers in the beginning makes your game easier to manage in the long run.

So for first year I build like this.

School, Place beside paused Market.
Market, place and pause.
Forestry Node, Place and Pause,
Roads, as described above.
Houses placed and paused.
Woodcutter, Blacksmith, Tailor, all build alongside the Paused Marketplace. Pause each of these buildings as well.
Two houses paused at the Market location.

Once I have those basic buildings in place, and the road is connecting them all. I assign all my workers as labourers, and gather resources. Only gather Stone and Iron from the Forestry Node are First. Don't cut down those trees, as it will reduce the amount of food you can gather right away. Then I Hire Two builders as soon as all the supplies have been delivered to my schoolhouse. Once the school is being built, I unpause the Forestry Node's buildings, and my labourer's will deliver supplies there. Once the school is built, I hire my teacher immediately. The loss of one worker at this stage does tend to hurt a little bit. But "No Pain" "No Gain" The extra 33% efficiency from Educated workers is far more beneficial than it is to have uneducated workers working at less then their best efforts over the long term. This also slows down your Birth Rates a little as well. As student's won't begin having babies until they are "Adults" A 16yo female uneducated can begin having children with her partner , But a 16 yo Student cannot begin having babies until they have graduated school.

Once my Forestry Node is completed, I unpause my Woodcutter, and Blacksmith, and One or Two houses. If you build all your housing immediately, then you will be risking "starvation' in at least one of the houses, and that will reduce your productivity overall. So go homeless for a few years. Your people will warm themselves in Any house that has heat, and will eat just what they need to eat straight from the Barn.

Once your Blacksmith Tailor and Woodcutters are built, Use a Single worker to operate these three buildings. Set the Tools limit to 50, or 100, and same for the Tailor. Once the limit is reached, move the worker to a new job by shutting the building off. And turning the next job on. The woodcutter's limits, I set at 200, for the first house, and raise that limit by 200 for every house built.

Year one is finished. You should have your forestry manned about 2 each in the Forester and Gatherer positions, One Hunter, One Teacher, One Cycle worker, and One Builder, the rest in Labour, Always keep at a minimum of ONE Labourer on hand at all times. If you have nothing to build then remove the Builder and place him on Labourer, to gather up supplies from the Area, Stone, wood, and iron, is always high demand early game.

Continue to build up your houses, One or two per year. By year ten, you should be ready to build your Marketplace. You know you need the Market, when your Barn is almost at Capacity. Before adding in another Barn, Build the Market, it will empty your Barn, and save you from having to build the new barns. Once you have the market, you should have between ten and twelve houses, and three farms, your Forestry Node, should be working with Four each in Gathering and forestry, and One Hunter. I rarely if ever bother putting more than One hunter in each cabin, as it is a minimal gain, and when you are very short on population, you really should be careful where you place your people.

Also, one thing to note. Your people should be Gathering or producing at a minimum, 500 food per position. So if you build a farm, and it is only giving you 300 food per year, Rebuild the farm larger in size. I prefer to Farm 8x15 And place Three farms side by side, with a Road all around each farm and in between them. I also place two houses at the Farm site, and One or Two Barns.

I will place a 2x10 Stockpile at my forestry Road, closest to the houses, as it helps speed delivery of wood. I will then place a 10x10 on the edge of Forestry Node, and may or may not place a road, using Shift key, to make it a diagonal road that skims the Radius of my forestry Node. I will always place One barn between my Blacksmith and Tailor, and One 6x6 Stockpile directly beside my Woodcutter. The Woodcutter, I will always place on the side Nearest to the Forestry Node, and usually at the intersection of the road connecting the Market and Forestry. Be sure to put down at least three houses near the Market, for the Vendor, the Woodcutter, Blacksmith and Tailor's Job. And you will need a minimum of 5 Houses for the Forestry Node. I will backfill my housing, by adding in extra houses to all my production locations. So for example. I will add in three Barns, and Three more houses behind my original housing for the Forestry Node, This will give my people ample housing, for if there is a death in the family, or if builders take over one of my houses, and it will also supply me with local Labourers later on, and you always want to be sure to have Local Labourers in every location you build.
A trick to find your building spots and what you have "queued" is to go to the professions tab and click on the > arrow thing on the line for the builders. That will cycle you through the current "jobs" for that profession, active or paused.
I don't remember if that cycle is in the actual construction order or a random order. I -think- they're sorted from highest to lowest priority, with the paused buildings sorted where they would be i you unpaused them.

Pausing buildings just after you've placed their footprint is a good way to make sure they remain at the lowest priority possible and don't draw resources away from more important construction sites.

Not to mention that you'll be able to see the pause symbol above the building, thereby giving you an idea where to look for it. Very helpful indeed.
