Fishing in lakes
Hello. Are there fish in the lakes that are not connected to any river in this game?

Yep. Anywhgere with water has fishies. Even the tiny streams. Just keep in mind that the more "free" water you have in the fishing dock's circle, the more fish it'll catch. Anything encroaching on that circle will reduce the amount of fish available, including another fishing dock's circle.

The only thing that will not work normally on a lake not connected to rivers is the Trade Post. The Trader's boat won't magically appear on the lake, it needs a river or a small stream to get there. If you place a Trade Post on an isolated lake, it'll only served as a kind of specific storage place that you can use to store specific items at instead of a general barn. (You'll still need barns though. Regular workers don't understand the idea of bringing stuff directly to a Trade Post or a Market if there's no barn available).

I've never seen a Trader's boat on a small stream. It's my understanding that they only travel on the big river.

Trader boats can travel up small streams, IF that small stream is connected to the main river. It's usually not as time-efficient to place a Trade Post on a lake far from the main river though, so it's pretty much only done by weird people who want to check if it works. It does. :)

I've done for logistical reasons !! I had a lake to the left of the map in an area that was way off the main lake. So putting the Trade Post in that lake meant I could easily keep that area of map stocked up with goods that were otherwise scarce on the map.

They can also occasionally reach land-locked lakes:
I just put the Trade Post there as a big storage building and was amazed when a trader turned up !!

Interesting, thanks.

However, Fishing Docks will only fish in lakes OR rivers. I put one on a spit of land (lake side) so they accessed both and production was so bad I trashed it.

Not sure I agree with that. I try to put fishing docks on lake/river junctions whenever possible for maximum water coverage. I can get 500 food per person per year, which I consider to be more than acceptable.
I'm happy with any location where I get an individual catch size of 6 or better. If it's still early in the game I will also be happy with 5 per catch. Most docks I build will provide 7's and 8's per catch. I have had 9's and once even managed a 10.

I manage 11 catch size a few times, but the overall production might not be as good as 9-10 catch size with better set up.

Catch size 9 and 11
