Kenway's Fleet - better to sell nearly destroyed ships, or repair?
I have 8 ships, no Man o Wars yet. Some of my ships are just about ready to expire, it is asking for 47 or 53 gems to repair them. I'm inclined to just salvage them and board more ships. Is it worthwhile to repair ships? I've gotten pretty good at the battles, my level 11 Schooner always fires first, usually twice before the enemy can fire back. I take very little damage during the exchanges, if at all.

My view would be repair, just cos otherwise you then have to go to the trouble of traking down a ship of the level/type you want. I think repair costs are on a sliding scale so it costs way more to repair heavily damaged ships compared to keep repairing when only 5% damaged.

As I repaired even when only 10% damaged I found that usually the reward for clearing a route will cover damage costs.

After you get all the docks the gems aren't going to be any issue. I have 4k+ gems so I can repair pretty much everything.

You either board a ship to salvage it for gems, or you board a ship to replace a damaged one you salvaged for gems. It really doesn't matter which order you do it, either you way you end up with a fixed ship and a pile of gems.

The level 11 Schooner is pretty good in most situations. Put one in the first slot to get the speed bonus and most times he will get 2 shots off before your oppenent does. Most of the early battles can be won just with 3 fully repaired level 11 schooners. It's only really when you come up against Man 'o Wars or double frigates you need to go in a bit stronger. And put your strongest ship in slot 2 as, for me, they seem to attack slot 2 more than the others so you want a ship than can take most damage in that slot.

As Inardesco mentions, once you get a full fleet gems won't be an issue. 9999 is the max gems you can have.

OK, thanks. I've been repairing for exactly the reason mbutton15 stated, otherwise I just have to keep finding new ships to board. And yes, there is now always a net gain in gems. I opened up the Bay of Biscay missions, by going from Treacherous all the way to safe. It was 100+75+50 gems for 225, and only cost me about 50 total in repairs.

The companion app on iphone is great. Every morning I launch battles on the app until every route is green, and then send out my 9 ships on the most profitable missions available. When I am off work after dinner, I fire up Black Flag and have 20K or more waiting for me to pick up. Makes upgrading the ship and Kenway so much easier.

I have to much cash to do anything sensible with aside from buying ammunition for Kenway and the jackdaw XD

Am now well up over 100K in cash. The morning "Kenway-mission on iOS, evening play" is working like a charm. Have 13 ships now, including 3 Man o Wars. Have found that 3 level 11 Schooners win just about every battle, often without allowing the enemy ships to fire. That means the battle does not cost me a single gem.

What I need now is a bigger Man o War. All 3 of mine cap out at 70 cargo, and I have 2 missions which require 80. Looks like I may need to track down a level 60 MoW.

The 49 man o wars give you 80 cargo and the 60 man o wars give you 90 cargo.

Best way to get those is to get 4 wanted and then let them come at you. Be prepared though, since they come with a Frigate consort.
